Opinions on Model Slipway
« on: October 15, 2009, 05:10:51 am »

I'm new here and just wanted to say hello. I've decided on the "Loyal" Class by Model Slipway as my next build and wondered if anyone could direct me to a build log of this ship. Thanks and nice board.

Hi Tugfan

Welcome aboard.
There are lots of other tug fans on here and so you will be able to plug into a wealth of knowledge during your next, and future, builds.

I'm looking to build a kit this winter and was wondering what everyone's opinion on Model Slipway is. What is good and bad and what tug kit would you folks recommend? I have built kits before. Also, any Slipway build logs anyone could point to would be nice. Thanks.

I have done several MSW kits and they are excellent.

Laurie and Jackie are great to do business with.

Kits are good as are the instructions and drawings,.

Their white metal fittings and brass etchings are excellent.

After sales service is great.

They have an excellent web site full of information, tips and photos

My builds.

I would echo all that Dicky has said. Over the years Mayhem has had glowing reports on every aspect of Model Slipway.

I would simply add that they are great folk to meet at the shows. Their Web Site is very helpful as it not only features their kits but also provides much helpful modelling guidance which is applicable to our hobby. You can always call them and receive reliable help.

I have built the Loyal Moderator. It is a fine kit with very good instructions and makes into an excellent model. Many are featured in various places on Mayhem, I suggest you put the name into our "Search" box above and see what comes up. I am not sure if we have a detailed build described on Mayhem.

Dicky,

I know those builds. I meant a detailed build of a "Loyal Moderator".

My "Trader Visit" to Model Slipway was recently published in Model Boats. You can see it here: http://www.modelboats.co.uk/news/article.asp?a=5648

I have to say I was really impressed with the whole operation.

Thanks guys. I really wanted a Our Lass II, but they won't ship to the states until after January.  >>:-(  The Loyal was my second choice. I also looked at some Robbe boats but they don't seem to go together without some trouble. I'll post some pictures after Christmas when I get the kit.

I think i am going mad here, im sure i posted on this topic?

Anyhow i have built the Drumbeat and the Gry Maritha, both were excellent kits but i felt the Trent was not as good, seemed to use a hell of a lot of filler...

Thanks

I agree about the Trent.

Some of the printed sheet parts need to be cut on the inside of the line, other parts need to be cut on the outside of the line and some others in the middle of the line. Moral of the story cut at the outside and do a whole lot of sanding.

If you want the parts to fit exactly buy Tamiya.

I don't mind any parts not being the right size as long as they can be cut down to fit , when they are small they are just scrap as filler is not an option for me. the cost of getting things exact would double the cost of kits  at least and take the pleasure out of building , I started on the old Aerokits type models, you could put them together as they where (well just) or shape the parts to fit , you can tell the difference when they are built. look on ebay and the difference stands out at times..

6705 Russell:

No, you are not going mad, you did post but it appeared twice. I deleted one of the duplicates, all was fine but now, as you see, they have both gone! A little kink in the system, sorry.

I've decided on the Maggie M. Are there any build logs on this boat? I've looked and haven't found any yet.

Now it seems the kit will be revised and not re-released until 2010.

What will be the difference between what it is now and what they plan to do to the kit? I thought the parts were already CNC processed.
