Egrete in 1:24 - Propulsion options?
« on: October 16, 2009, 11:08:28 am »

Via Email to Mayhem....

Hello (or is it Ahoy?) Martin,

My name is Peter.

Years ago I read the Model Boats issues on the construction of a Rhine River Barge Tug - the Egrete.  Being a bit out of it I decided to build Egrete in 1:24 instead of the drawn scale and to make it more robust I have built it out of Polycarbonate sheet.  All goes more or less well, there are some unanswered questions I have; what size motor would be right for the tug to be?  It will be about 92 cm. long by 31 cm. wide and 23 cm. high; the props should be 6.5 cm.  I have looked at the Graupner line and they have a couple of promising motors, their Speed 720BB and  Speed 900BB  which they claim have high torque.  I am also looking into the different drive types and am open to suggestion.

Thanks much
Peter G

we had one in a club years ago and it was about the same size

Go for 2 fan motors from the scrapyard
and it will have plenty of torque and speed for what you require

this was conected to a 4 bladed prop and a Kortz nozzle and was probably one of the
most manouverable tugs I have seen for its size
