Can anyone recommend a battery???
« on: October 17, 2009, 04:13:00 pm »

Hi there,

I'm building a 34 inch Huntsman 31 by Precedent, I already have an electric motor (Graupner 700 BB Turbo - 9.6v) which is running a small three bladed prop.

I was thinking of putting a motorcycle battery (12v) in the boat, but on trying it, the battery to too tall (10 x 9 x 15), so that idea flew out of the window.

I'm looking for speed and a reasonable running time .... would a small 12v sealed battery do the job or would you go the ni-cad route????

Also looking at a EL Model 110A RC Motor Speed Controller ESC SE082 off Ebay, am I trying to over-engineer this model ?????

First time at the hobby, I'm really enjoying putting the boat together. I am probably asking the most stupid of questions, but if you don't know, you have to ask ....

Also, can anyone recommend a model shop near Worcester ????

Thanks, Alan

If you,re looking for speed, then forget about a big 12v battery, they are just too heavy, you could go for a 3800 9.6v or a 8cell 9.6v, these would keep the weight down, but still give you a decent run time,

Thanks for your help guys ....

OK, on the comments or lack of them on the speed controller ... sometimes saying nothing is better than says loads .... I take it folks have had problems .....

Thanks for the battery comments, being new to the hobby, I really wasn't sure on the best route .... but it looks like the ni-cad route is the way to go ....

OK .... back to Fleabay for another search ....

depends what you call a Reasonable run time, and how fast, light weight  is speed and amps is duration. motorcycle batteries are NOT generally used any more there are much better ways of getting power, the speed ctr you have listed is the one that has had the most bad press on hear prob , you may be lucky Go for a UK built one that is returnable and can be repaired ( its easy to smoke one when you are new) I think there is some one who advertises on hear I tend to use Electonize as I have had no problems with them and they are a reasonable price 30A.  UK amp's seem to be better than the mythical Chinease amps.

Look at  http://www.youtube.com/user/onehs93#p/u/10/s6Q1fpt4_Qk    a 42" huntsman on test with nicads and a 9.6 700bb this prob weighs 50% more than yours. the fire boat on the link is the same size as yours but still  a bit heaver than yours  http://www.youtube.com/user/onehs93#p/u/7/osMJz0ZrjcQ

Component shop do a 9.6V 4600mAh SC NiMH Battery Pack for £30.45 plus p&p.

http://www.component-shop.co.uk/html/batteries.html

Excellent service, normally next day delivery if ordered A.M. depending on post strikes.

Speak to Dave ( full leather jacket ) at ACTion R/C Electronics for speed controllers etc.

Yes, that's exactly what I use plus I got a 12v pack which gets my 36inch MTB up onto the plane.
Don't bother with the 110amp speed controller, they burn out big style when a 700 turbo stalls. Dave at Action will sort you out for sure, alternatively I got one of these which does the job

with a 700bb think about a speed controller that will do up to 21v as you can get the best out of a 700bb at that voltage.

Personally I would go Lipo but.... being a new boater the Nimh is MUCH more tolerant of of mishandling. A gentleman in our club is running a 48" on Nimh with success, all ACTion electronics :-)). 3 6 cell packs in series for each motor.
I think you would want 2 packs in series for 14.4 volts at a minimum .
Not much success being had with the 110 amp ESC, saw a guy over on RC Groups who blew one up in an Airboat so no stalling there, I think he said he's gone through 3 now in various things.

I think in a year or two Lipo will be used a lot more they are still surrounded by stories of things going wrong and the danger of them as with brushless motors the price is comming down , the controllers for brushless are very reliable for the price and the motors don't have brush gear to wear out .. so as when nicads became available and people banned them from being charged at meetings etc and all the old folk would say they will never catch on and there is nothing wrong with a good old leakey wet led acid  battery. so lipo is the future, just buy a half decent charger and you will never look back..
