Armed Coaster
« on: October 24, 2009, 12:18:55 am »

I have just been given a plan for 1/96 scale steam coaster. Looks like the 800 ton 247foot version. I was wondering if during the war these by any chance were armed in any way.
Cheers, Adrian.

The immediate and obvious answer is a "Q-Ship", a disguised freighter designed to lure U-boats to the surface. Have a look here http://www.battleships-cruisers.co.uk/q_-_ships.htm

For her tonnage,I wouldn't expect her to have been given much more than a 3" gun on the foredeck, and possibly one on the poop. ASW wise she would probably have been fitted with K-guns on either beam, with small depthcharge racks fitted at the stern.AA wise, probably just various calibre machineguns.

Check out the Q ship HMS Lothbury built 1906. Also went under the alias names Argo, Sarusan and Stead

660 tons gross and served from 23-9-1917 to 11-11.1918.

Layout is almost the same apart from (at some times) a third mast aft.

Carried 1x4inch, 1x15pdr and 2x12pdr.

Imperial War Museum have photos including one in dazzle camouflage.

The one shown in the posted site from Rick, SS Suffolk Coast, was 870 tons and served from 16-8-18 to 11-11-18 so never saw action. She had 1x4inch and 1x12pdr guns as well as other bits - bomb throwers etc. She did a tour round the ports at the end of WW1, once the 'secret' of the Q Ships was out. Several good shots on line and the layout suits your plans a treat.
