Blocks & dead eyes
« on: October 25, 2009, 06:27:58 am »

I have almost finished the hull of my Billings Jylland, the mast are made, now for the rigging.
I have packets of Billings blocks and dead eyes, all a most 'attractive' milk chocolate colour.
I assume they should be a dark brown, or black. Any thoughts please.

I think milk chocolate will melt into the background (pun intended) on smaller scale models and not be noticed.

In the past I have bought deadeyes from The Model Dockyard, they do them in walnut, and I think beech (not sure of the wood, but a lighter colour).
On real ships I have seen various shades from grey (old dry wood) to black (wet old wood) and light to dark brown (newer wood). Now that the walnut deadeyes I bought are weathered, they are a very pale wood colour.

Not much info, but I hope it helps.

Euromodels supply good quality deadeyes in walnut and boxwood and in a range of sizes from 10mm downwards.
They come in packs of 10 and are not expensive.
The odd eye is  misaligned slightly but this can be easily rectified by carefully re-drilling the errant hole.
Look up their website - it's a treasure trove of period fittings.

Good hunting.

The working sailing ships I have sailed on usually had black or dark brown standing rigging (Rope) tarred with Stockholm tar --wire rigging usually black with black bitchamastic paint or occasionally white with white lead and tallow ---Deadeyes painted black with tar varnish--- but occasionally oiled with linseed oil---- wooden blocks were almost always oiled with linseed oil --- iron blocks black with tar varnish---alloy blocks painted buff , black , grey or occ. white
