Lifeboat kits
« on: September 24, 2009, 05:42:43 pm »

Guys,

This may have been better sent to Martin as a pm, but I wonder if there'd be a vote in favour of a table showing the various lifeboat kits available in the same way that there's currently one for tug kits on the main Mayhem site.  I've had a look at several manufacturers sites, and sometimes think I've found them all, and then another one pops up in the discussions on here and I realise that I'd missed it.  It might not be 100% accurate, but it seems as though it would be better than I could manage. {:-{

After looking at them all I went out and bought one from Speedline models, not the cheapest but I believe the best kit for a life boat  :-))    8)

The current state of the market in lifeboat kits and fittings will be covered in the forthcoming Model Boats   Naval and Lifeboat Winter Special on sale 29th October (subscribers get it a week earlier).

You can see the cover here: http://www.modelboats.co.uk/

A lot of enthusiasm has gone into producing this issue Geoff so I think you will find it worth the money.

Absolutely Bryan, so what's wrong with that? If you don't tell people what's available they won't know about it will they? It's still their choice whether they buy it or not.

The other week I looked in on Ron Parker, He is building a Dave Metcalf RNLB Alice Upjohn at 1/48 scale, and that comes out at 41.5''.
As always with Ron's models, looking fabulous already, in fact so good I was instantly sold, so he has organised one for me - collect it on Thursday.
Beautiful mouldings, piles of fittings, and the best drawing I have seen, and with a comprehensive assembly book, can't wait to get it.
Definitely worth a look on Dave Metcalfs site.

If anyone wants a little lifeboat, a 12" Taymar is just being prepared as an EeZeBilt 50+. I would put a piccie up, but photos don't seem to work here....

It's a nice kit (I've got one), but it's not particularly scale - and the drawing (unless it's changed since I got mine) is definately not correct for Alice Upjohn.

Of course Lance, 1/12, I had a Bulldog hull from Dave at 1/48, brain in gear,  just the wrong gear !
I have never made a lifeboat before, so my perspective is perhaps a little untutored, but I still love it.

Hello DG, sounds interesting but what is an EeZeBilt 50+. exactly?

Hello DG, sounds interesting but what is an EeZeBilt 50+. exactly?

Some oldsters might remember the Keil Kraft EeZeBilt range of starter model boats - simple things built in 1/16" balsa, with a sort of egg-box self-jigging structure. They were introduced 50 years ago last Christmas, and died some time in the 1990s.

I didn't want them to be forgotten, so I set up a web site at http://modelboats.hobby-site.com to present a few pictures. I've also put up scans of the balsa die-cut sheets if anyone wants to build one. Then some others got involved, notably Chingdevil, Maninthestreet and Kiwi, and now we have quite a few of the original plans, and hopefully more coming.

The 50+ idea was to create some new boat kits in the same style as the originals, but a little bit bigger, so they'd be easier to add radio. We now have a 20" RAF Crash Tender and an 18" Edwardian Steam Launch being made, Kiwi is working on a magnificent little 12" Swordsman, I have a set of Taymar plans just finished, and (was it Rocketman?) is meant to be producing a Chris-Craft (hint-hint!). More will be forthcoming. See the website...

All these are intended to be small, cheap and suitable for introducing kids to the hobby of actually building boats rather than buying them. Send us an e-mail address if you would like some pictures of the boats in the pipeline...

Thanks, Charlie. It was originally intended to be little more than a collection of pictures. What I'm learning is that it's a full-time job trying to run a web site and produce content when you're a cack-handed draughtsman and modeller like me! Did you see Kiwi's Terrier drawings? They're the best thing on the site by far...

The Eezebilt Tamar is starting up on the Eezebilt site now.

I think I have made the hull of a Severn and the superstructure of a Tamar. Hey, anyone can make a mistake! But that means I only have to mod the hull a bit, do a Severn superstructure and you get two boats for the price of one.

I will put up the plans after I have had a go at sorting out the differences, but if anyone fancies their hand at a little lifeboat over Christmas they can have the plans I've got now, which will produce the boat as shown...
