Paper Hull on Wood Frames
« on: November 06, 2009, 01:22:39 am »

Hi Masters of the Model Boat Universe,
I have recently acquired a nice static schooner rigged two master which is in need of renovation.
The hull is what appears to be painted paper on wood frames which are quite tightly spaced.
The hull length is 38 cms.
The hull surface is a bit undulating and lumpy in places for its length but obviously I cannot rub the 1 - 1.5mm undulations out with abrasives or I will go through the paper.
I have thought about spraying with high build primer but there are some very fine doublers round the sheerline at deck level and at the bow which I do not want to bury under paint.
Rather than wreck it I would leave well alone and re paint the hull as is but thought someone may have a solution to my problem.
Can anyone assist?
All suggestions would be most welcome.
Kind regards
John (Yorkij) {:-{ {:-{

I think rubbing down will wreck it.

You could fill with body filler and rub down, but stop when the copur starts to show.
However this would add to the weight.

I suspect that this 'problem' is typical of paper on frame boats, and may not be a problem at all.
BUT I am no expert.

Hi there first of all welcome to the Forum

Next we will have to check your passport on Sunday at the Marine Park.

Yorkshire lad living in South Shields  :}

Can you post a picture of the model as this will help you get the right answers to your problem at a guess I would say that the paper on  the hull may have been brown gum strip covered in shellac varnish and then painted over , so to add any type  of filler on top may make it worse

Back again.
Many thanks for the replies from Bluebird and Tiger Tiger.
As you say Tiger x 2 , the undulations may well be a characteristic of paper skinned models which adds to their charm but I just wanted second opinions on that.  I agree filler will probably spoil the model and mask other detail.
Thanks for your welcome Bluebird (John). I have lived in Shields since 1978 and have had my Passport checked many times. I was captured by a local Dance Teacher whilst I was at the Marine College doing my Masters Ticket and have been here ever since!!  There are many expatriates like me in Shields as you probably know.
I think your diagnosis of gummed paper with shellac or varnish of some sort is probably spot on. I agree filler will probably ruin it.
I will try and post some pics later today, if not today, then on Monday, for you to mull over.
May I say I do not agree with Hookey Walker's view of Shields!!!
Thanks again for your replies. :-)) :-))

Sorry. My photos are over the 161 allowance.
I will try and find out how to reduce them to fit.

It seems to me the only alternatives are to strip and re-cover, or to retouch the paint where it needs it and leave it. I'd recommend the latter, as it gives the model some character.

Thanks for the replies.
As is said, perhaps it is best left alone apart from re painting.
Perhaps matt or silk paint would be better than the present gloss.
Cheers
