they are amazing  tugs   153ft long  10.000 hp   ive started to build one of these tugs  in 1;50th scale  = 38inch long   regards ray

A number of years ago,I was fortunate enough to have  weekend on one in Immingham, as my uncle was skipper of the Lady Alma until he retired.

Very impressive manoeuvreablility and strength, not that I would have been allowed to have a little go  O0 O0.

Just a shame that the voith drive does not scale down to operate really effectively in a model.

Hi the technique used is a indirect tow and has been used on voith tugs for a long time. You simply thrust sideways in the opposite way to the direction you want to take the towed vessel, the work is done by water pressure on the tug skedge. When the towed vessel slows to near stopped then you swing the tug round and pull as a conventional tug. It is an highly effective method to control a a moving vessel, at first everyone thought you could not role over a tractor tug this way, but since it has been proved possible to capsize the tug in theory.
