SS POLITICIAN (Whisky Galore)
« on: November 10, 2009, 08:11:12 am »

Many of you will have seen the film Whisky Galore which is the story of the SS CABINET MINISTER that went ashore on a Scottish island during the war with a cargo of Whisky.     The film was based on fact and the actual ship was Harrison Lines SS POLITICIAN, wrecked on Eriksay, Scotland in 1941 with 22,000 cases of Scotch whisky aboard.    Several months ago, after having found the plans of POLITICIAN, I produced this model at 32'=1"

Thanks,
I thought this one came out quite well.    I built it at the request of a London saleroom who felt that a model of POLITICIAN would have "great potential," but afraid it was the only one out of four that didn't even sell at the last sale, so it turned out a bit of a flop in the end!     At the moment, I am minus the delivery costs and the saleroom costs as well - a total of £48!

I think the problem was "London saleroom". You`d have better luck in Glasgow (or Oban,Fort William etc, anywhere on the Scottish west coast  islands). The film comes a close second to the Para Handy tales in the most loved of Scottish films league.

It was well-publicised in Scotland and numerous people said they were "definitely going for it," but all interest melted away on the day of the sale!     Afraid it will just have to stay where it is now, as it would be throwing more money away paying to get it back again and then send it north with no guarantee of it selling.    No doubt it will go eventually!

Perhaps if you copied the real ship and added a few cases of whiskey to sweeten the bargain?   :}

Lovely model as usual.

There were lots of enquiries about it from Scotland, including Eriksay, but when it came to the sale, it did not sell despite being widely publicised by the auction room.       It will just have to stay there until it sells now.    Paying to get it back and then sending it elsewhere is simply not an option with me as I am already minus about £50 on it (transport costs and auction house fees)!    I mainly build them for pleasure and sell them because I haven't the space to keep them (Current build, FALLS OF FOYERS is the 237th since I started counting in October 1992!).
