Lifeboat colour
« on: November 10, 2009, 09:27:51 pm »

I have found a different shade of orange for my Tyne superstructure, i have always used either humbrol 18 or  Volkswagon orange. On the aft cabin i have applied a coat of VW orange and on the main cabin i have used Rover Blaze, both available in Halfords, i think that the Rover Blaze is far more towards the original Tyne colour as i have two more coats to apply and then the lacquer....

I've used Humbrol 18 on one lifeboat and carplan red-40 on the other, it's actually an orange.
The difficuly with using the car sprays comes when you just want to do a very small piece or some touching up.
Spraying a bit in the can lid then using s brush just doesn,t seem to work as well as using the hubrol paints from the tin

Russell   nice looking Tyne. I have also built one and thought a small tip I found by my error was a mention, to use white primer
as grey alters  the VW Orange when it dries .

most may already know but thought it was worth a mention.

Also you can under coat with cortina red. It gives a more vibrant colour to the VW orange. Obviously primed with white first.

Hello
I'm looking myself for the orange to go on my Arun. I was in the paint shop at Aston Martin today and they didn't have the tinter's to make up BS 557 paint. Now I'm thinking that maybe using Halfords rattle cans may be the best way forwards But Which is the right colour, and is it just called VW orange or is there a bit more to it's name???

Hello, the correct orange colour for the Arun was "Samoan Sun" which was an enamel paint. I do think that they may have changed the colour by now.  Nemesis

white ;- vauxhall glacier white , below waterline on slipway launched vessels , OR  red oxide primer & clear laquer or varnish ( primer is pourus !) blue ;- oxford blue , orange ;- volkswagon brilliant orange , decks ;- rover tempest grey . thiese are the colours that i used to use while painting the model lifeboats that were biult & operated around the bristol area a few years ago , the correct codes were obtained from the  R N L I  in poole and matched for me by one of our local paint factors , i often bought my paint in litre tins , if your haveing difficulty getting the colours from the local car accsessory shops most paint factors can supply paint in aerosol tins ready to use to your required shade ! jon

After a look on the web i have found a place that will make up BS557 orange and put it in a aerosol can. Its going to cost £20.00 for two cans plus P&P. I take it they will also do the other paints as well.

bill d203 , before you go and mail order your paint have you tried your LOCAL paint factor ? most good suppliers can put your mixed colour into an aerosol can for you , its easier if you have a problem with the paint ( ie shade difference ) as you can go to see them , it also means that if you want some more later its local , so you can collect it when you need it ! jon
