I don't know about the bow thruster in the Bismarck, but did you know the carrier Graf Zeppelin had a pair of retractable, Voith- Schneider units in the bow that could move the ship at 4.5 Knots. They were for keeping the carriers heading steady in a cross wind I believe.. :o...Smudge

That's interesting. I only found out the other day that our nuclear subs have a sort of retractable outboard motor built into the bottom of the ballast tanks which can be used to aid berthing or as a last resort "get you home" propulsor.

Nothing like having a backup. On my old 25 foot sailing boat I made up a wooden bracket whch could be fixed to the boarding ladder at the stern so that the little dinghy outboard could be used to push the boat along at a couple of knots or so if the main engine went kaput and there was no suitable wind.

You learn something new every day

I used to work for the company that made the outboards, was all hush hush at the time. Only two fitters had the qualifications to work on them, and there was a storage area with a lot of spares hidden away inside

With the usual fleabay sellers' knowledge level, I would guess that they couldn't tell the difference between a thruster and a cooling water intake.
