Best way to shape hull "wedges" ( stealers )
« on: November 14, 2009, 10:05:20 pm »

Apologies for the terminology i have used in the subject, but its the best way i could think of describing it!

As i have progressed with the planking on my hull, i have had to craft the wedge shaped pieces to fit in the gaps where i cant use a normal bit of wood.   I have managed with trial and error so far, but wondered if there was a better and more accurate method to use.

Any advice would be appreciated!

They`re called "stealers"and the way you are having to shape them individually is perfectly normal  O0
You have to craft them by hand...no set shapes or sizes though as everything depends on the size of the planks your using etc  :-))

I`ve seen some models that don`t have stealers, each plank individualy shaped so as to fit perfectly...looks absolutely stunning but what a lot of work, worth it though.

Ahhh,  i knew they had a proper name, and have read it somewhere before... Thanks for correcting me!

I have experimented with a few scrap bits of the planking and seem to have figured out a technique that works for me and delivers a workable result.

Cheers

Aidi hi there

Have a look at the Cervia tug build - its in the masterclass section - on page 1 of the build half way down; you will see the method I use for making stealers - not as difficult as you think  :-))

Thanks for the rename!  It will hopefully help others in the future.

John,  I am using your build log a fair bit as a guide to my planking.   I saw how you had inserted stealers into the hull, and have done pretty much the same.    Now that i have done a couple, its just a case of a bit of patience in making sure they are shaped correctly.

If it's going to get covered up, I'll do whatever it takes to get stealers fitted:

... the triangular bits were all made to fit on the fly, as planking went on from keel upwards, with the easiest run of the "normal" planks guiding the shape..
