Help Please - Planking again
« on: November 18, 2009, 09:41:57 pm »

Good Evening,

Could i ask for some advice please.  The attached picuture shows the problem which i have encountered whilst planking my boat.  So far, all other planks have lain nicely againsnt the frames, however i now have one that is not.  As you can see in the picture, the plank sits against the frame on the first frame at the stern and again sits nicely on the 3rd frame.  However, it is quite a distance from the 2nd frame.

I am at a bit of a quandry as how to proceed.  Do i just lay the rest of the planks, and then try and fill the gap with a stealer of sorts and then see if i can get it smooth using filler, or is there a different solution that i should adopt to rectify this?

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It looks to me like the middle frame isnt cut right.  I would suggest check the drawings, and if you find it is wrong, cut out a correct profile to glue onto the frame and continue planking.

If it is right, I would place planks across the 3 frames, measure the gap at the middle frame and make up a piece to glue to the frame to close the gap.

clear? Hope so.

Thanks for your replys guys,

So effectively, i would be making a small wood piece to glue to the frame along its vertical axis to pad it out and creat the correct profile so when the plank is laid it sits nicely onto it?

I want to make sure i understand this fully before going ahead.

Aidi,

Yes, thats the idea, you will need to find a reference point that is common to the old frame and new frame, maybe the keel point. This will ensure you postion the new bit correctly.
