USP Microscope
« on: November 25, 2009, 11:13:12 am »

Hi Mayhemers,

With the diminishing size of electronic components these days (or is just my eyes!) I have been using a magnifying glass to check my soldering, but even that has missed the odd bad joint.

So, I've invested in one of those USB microscopes in order to see a image on the computer screen. The model that I've purchased is the Veho Discovery VMS-001 with a stand (there are many others to choose from). The best feature is the ring of LEDs that give good illumination on the subject that is superior to using a magnifying glass. Also, you can also take snapshots and even video.

The only trouble now is that some of my soldering looks like a pigs ear (and many other assorted shapes!).

In the first photo are solder posts 0.1 inch apart with thin soldered wire and in the second is a piece of 8 thou (0.22mm) wire with a Veroboard hole in the background.

Sounds a Fun instrument.

Perhaps you could start a  "What part of a small section is this"  competition. ok2

ken

ps  I used to stare into these things as a machine shop inspector may years ago, and I agree with you that 'solder' takes some scrutiny as it can look 'orrible' magnified. Best not to know.

Ian

This looks very useful.

Can you advise if the magnification is in two fixed steps of 20X and 100X, or can you adjust it in between this range?

Many thanks
Jules

Hi Ian (Circlip),
Just had a look at your link and it is for a webcam and not a microscope (but you probably realised that)  :(( {:-{.

" I'm sitting here at work near the CNC printed circuit drilling machine. All the code was written (very slowly) by me, VB6 on the PC and CCS 'C' on the PIC in the controller.

It did until recently have a camera system for aligning the spindle to the board, but issues with the frame grabber active-X plugin and modal/non-modal window restrictions have meant that it's been removed for now.

The camera was just an ordinary bargain basement webcam, but the focus ring was removed along with the front of the casing. It is then almost always possible to focus down to 10mm turning it into a microscope."

Lifted from another forum, looks like he saved a bob or two before flashin' the plastic.
