Its a DSV (diving support vessel) and I would hazard a guess that that one is scratch built and not a kit.

Swampbug, hi there,

I know that you said you wouldnt fancy scratchbuilding, however, if you do fancy building from a Plan, have you ever thought of the Seaforth Clansman (plan number MM1308 - from My Hobbys store), which is similar to the one which you fancy - or the Star Perseus (plan number MM1361 - from My Hobby Store).

I cannot say much about the Star Perseus (construction wise) as I have never built that model - but, I have built the Seaforth Clansman - using a plank on frame hull and I managed to get several working features on that particular model.  To give you some idea, I had the crane on the aft deck fully working Jib raising, lowering and slewing, plus the hook up/down.  The diving bell lowering/lifting - and fire monitors working.   Also independent bow and stern thruster working.   Bearing in mind this was a while ago and I used 'Bob boards' to control the bow thrusters, crane movement & etc.   Now,.... with todays technology - incorporating all of these working features would be a doddle.  Especially, as after I had built the plank on frame hull, one can now purchase a 'vac' formed hull for the Clansm,an (again from My Hobby Store) not sure of the price of it.

Some food for thought....

This ship (Toisa Polaris) has a hull that has been improved while designing Toisa Pegasus, Well Enhancer, HOS Achiever and HOS Iron Horse.
The hull of my Well Enhancer will come pretty close, but that also isn't a kit.
The shape of these hulls is pretty square, so this might be a good one to learn how to scratch-built a hull.
All you need is some drawings of what the hull would look like.

The Toisa Polaris is build at IHC in The Netherlands, this is there website: http://www.merwede.com/index.php?id=2548
Toisa Polaris: http://www.merwede.com/index.php?id=2621
Data sheet: http://www.merwede.com/fileadmin/Merwede/pdfsheets//shipyard/offshore/toisa_polaris.pdf

hi ya there Swampbug

May I ask a question?  :-))

I note, in your last message, that you say you prefer the model to be a kit which is all in the box and all pre-cut out...can you tell me .... is there any reason for this?  Are you new to modelling, or do you like everything to be at hand in the box all at once?

What, I wonder, actually puts you off from building from a plan??

is it?

a) having to source all of the materials to build with i.e. not knowing where to purchase from or what materials to use?

b) understanding the drawings i.e. how you decipher the drawings

c) you may be afraid you spend so much money and at the end of the day you may be left with a few bits and pieces and you wont have anything at the end of it which represents a model.

... following on from the above posting....

if say, for arguments sake, if you can get a plan and some materials in a box with an illustration on the front - would you be more tempted with that?

I am putting a picture on of a current project of mine - this comes from a plan and does it not resemble something from a kit.....

The reason I ask this, is, I am trying to put something together to help one and all.....aimed mainly at 'new to hobby' guys and gals.....

Hi John

Thanx for your posting

To be honest, i dont like the cutting out, i can read drawings ok

Also im disabled, due to an accident last year so all new to me.

I think i could do a scratch build, but the cutting out does put me off

Nice to hear from you

Pete  :-))

cheers Pete, for your reply - I am so sorry to hear about your accident.

Time will put things right for you.

By the way, my questions were aimed at one and all who would like to chip in....just gives a broad idea from what puts folk off from building from a plan....

I think Pete, hit the nail on the head there John.
I suppose a lot of people are put off by drawing the plans and then cutting the wood.
If it was laser cut, then that makes life a lot easier.

I'm with you Pete. I am able to work from drawings but because of the emphysema I cant handle the cutting out, it bad enough trimming hulls and cutting freeports on GRP hulls.

Like any woman i have changed my mind, im gonna build the Aziz as my next project

Its cheaper than the happy hunter, and bigger, it has the basic shape

for me to change her and build it like i want it, moving decks and the wheel house

to where i want it.
