1 metre Racing Sparrow (RS) build.
« on: December 02, 2009, 08:52:56 am »

My current, ongoing attempt at a scratch-build can be seen here.

http://racingsparrow.phpbbnow.com/viewtopic.php?p=582#582

Original design is for a 750mm boat (can be found here http://www.racingsparrow.co.nz/index.html ) but I made a few changes.  ok2

As this is my first attempt at a scratch-build I would welcome any constructive comments.

Gary.

Hi Gary,
Looking at your pictures I cannot see where your mast box is going to be have you made an allowance for it, also the lead bulb will cause drag with a nose like that something you don't want on an IOM yacht forget the fish shape it more to a point but you need to keep the weight of the bulb in the rules. Not being funny but you do know the weight of the bulb and what the fin length must be don't you if you want to race it.

I've already junked the 'yellow' bulb and have cast a new 'naca' shape in keeping with current thinking. The new bulb is 315mm long and has come out of the mould at 2.2 kilo.
The length of the keel will be 420mm from the waterline which I understand is the max.

As regards the mast it will initially be deck-mounted as I have no idea as to optimal positioning on this boat and deck-mounting allows a bit of playing around to find the best position.

I've no current plans to race the boat, just blast around around with a few friends on our local lake. That may change if it all works, of course  ok2

...............and three evenings later ............planking is much better than watching cr*p on the TV  :-))

A further question on running rigging.
Is it necessary to have a short piece of elastic in a loop system ?
Some diagrams show it some do not..

Hi Jake,
I bought a rig and sail kit from Housemartin Sails in the UK. £110 from memory.

Bit overpowered and pushing the nose down.

I just read the build log on the other forum. What a fabulous build, very very impressive and very well built. I have little interest in racing but I would dearly love to own a model like yours.  :-))
