I am building a Lighterage tug, scratchbuilt hull from plans and custom wheelhouse, and need some help with the running gear.

I am most comfortable with 12v and with Electronize esc, the problem I have is what to use for a motor.

I have a 40mm steerable Kort nozzle with a customised 4 blade brass prop (squared the ends of a 45mm prop until it was fitted and balanced)

What size motor would be best and should I use a reduction gearbox as well?

She is 29" x 8" and I am still not sure of her displacement yet as the sheerline is negotiable being a custom boat.



Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also a correction to the Kort nozzle and prop, they are 50mm.

Have a look at the charts and you may find one of there motors will do without  gearing or a Graupner 720  if not and you go geared go belt drive gears will drive you mad , they are so noisy you can get a belt drive from MFA that will do the job and will pull you about

A few more that would work try not to use smooth bets (O ring type) they need to be very tight for big props to stop slip where toothed belts can be slack and still get drive. you can also make your own if you have any metal work skills then just but the gears and belt locally I have built a few and they work well, thi s is an extream heavy duty for a fast brushless boat

I have been looking at a belt drive set up at Harbor Models from California, but that was for much larger and heavier tugs with props twice the size of mine.
I may have a go at building a set myself as I can get the parts from the local model shop,he doesn't stock anything marine, but ic buggy parts should work quite well and he does have some toothed belts.

MMB (on here) can supply a mabucci 550 motor that will rev up to 5000 on 12 volts so direct drive is available.

That won't heat up too much on a 50 mm 4 blade prop?

The 550 motors are no longer available from either Mark or us - they became obsolete and our (mutual) supplier ran out of stock. We are  expecting some slightly different Mabuchi 555s from the USA but they're still in transit somewhere.
The MMB755 would be a better choice for direct-drive or, as was mentioned earlier, the Graupner Speed 720 Torque. This should be available in the States from Loyalhanna Dockyard or Harbor Models.

Thanks FLJ, Loyalhanna has some great gear, and some of their kits are unbelievably desreable.

I do have a question about 1:16 scale fittings, they seem to be very rare and I have been having a major problem finding them, I guess this scale is a scratchbuilders dream, or nightmare. Is there anywhere that stocks them?
