Eyesight Test
« on: December 07, 2009, 10:24:03 am »

My ever helpful wife informed me last week that i should really get my eyes tested and she wouldnt let it go (shes a nurse) so the appointment was made and along i went like a good chap full of the opinion that my eyes were fine and i dont need glasses and i was going to prove it !
Well my name is called and off i go ,so sure im going to be right ,the nice chap asked me lots of questions while doing what he does and then finally he asked " what do you think your eyesight is like ? " fine i reply ,then he replies " take a look into the machine again " so i do and he says this is what you normally see , yep no problem i replied then came his reply this is what i can do with some glasses ! well to say i was surprised would be an understatement oh and my wife reminded me i was wrong as well !
Off i went yesterday to collect me goggles and what a difference ! the only problem with these glasses was that when i got home and she asked me to put them on  I FINALLY SAW WHAT I MARRIED !

So my advice is make sure you get your eyes tested before you get married  >:-o >:-o >:-o {-) {-) {-) {-) :-))

God help you if she ever sees your post Andy!! If you get beaten over the head  <*<perhaps someone will tell you , you should have seen it coming.
I first noticed mine were not quite right at the tender age of 45. Went into work, picked a piece of paper up from the desk to read it and found I couldn't focus on it at normal reading distance, I just put it down to tired eyes... wrong! That was the first instance and it was down hill from there on in. Reading glasses are the bain of my life, always losing them or breaking them. I now only buy cheapies (£1-99 from QD stores), they are absolutely fine for what I do and this was confirmed by the eye specialist. I am so bad at looking after these things as they meet with allsorts of disasters due to the things I get involved in. I lose my temper on a regular basis whilst hunting down the elusive specs which have gone AWOL. I decided to buy five pairs at a time and simply leave them all over the house so they are never that far away in an emergency. I have on occasion lost them in the garden, only to find them whe mowing the lawn as the mower shreds em and spits them out all over the place.
Glasses... hate the ruddy things but useless without them, might as well chop me ands orf cos I can't do anything.

It happened to me too.A very rapid onset of minimum reading distance and a few months after the process started,I needed low strength glasses for television.

Here is something you ought to check if you are a webmaster: colourblindness. The colour charts are priceless if you do graphics.

In the run up to 45 I had an eye check as well (after much frivolous, but obviously concerned and well meaning, mockery from my offspring).  "Yes" said the man, "these are reading glasses.  Just for reading."  So I went off to my office on the top floor, put on the glasses to have a read at that which needed it.  Amazing clarity.  They hadn't been printing things blurred, as I had begun to suspect.  Then I looked out of the window.  About 15 miles away over the picturesque rooftops of Blackpool was a view of Bleasdale Fells.  I could pick out the farmhouses, whereas before, just seeing that there were green lumps out there was as good as it got.  All I had to do then was get rid of the feeling of unease when moving about as the world no longer seemed to move quite as it should.

I had to have both reading and long distance for driving etc(Seeing?) That was a curse! Whatever I had on, were the wrong ones! When in the car, seeing for driving and reading Road Signs meant I couldn't read the Dashboard Instuments. I invested in a pair of BiFocals and after a short period getting used to them they are a marvel! No probs any more, so if you have the same trouble, invest in BiFocals, Brilliant!

Varifocals are even better but they are not suitable for everyone.

Always have regular eye tests as you get older. Consistently high pressure can indicate the presence of Glaucoma which will eventually make you blind. it can be controlled but not reversed. If you have a close relative with Glaucoma you can get your eye tests free on the NHS.

Varifocals are probably the best bet if you can get on with them
but I would also get a cheapo pair for close up work as the
varifocal lens construction gives you quite a small viewing area
for close objects. My varifocals are great but I still have a cheapo pair for modelling and electronics.

I used to be proud of my eyesight...in my job it was a requirement anyway. Both my parents had Glaucoma, and my mother eventually became totally blind. Father suffered but only went as far as "poor vision". Both of my parents need not have suffered if they'd had regular check-ups. Although I do not show any signs of Glaucoma, my regular check-ups showed the onset of ARMD (Age Related Macular Degeneration) which is causing me to gradually lose the sight in my right eye...a real "xxxxx" for a model maker. The form of ARMD I have is, at the present time, incurable.....but it's still worth a specialist "Keeping an eye on it" (no pun intended).
As you may imagine, I worry a lot about the final outcome of all this......so please, please, please have your eyes regularly checked. BY.

One other thing I noticed.. very quickly too, was that using glasses for close up work over the bench all day, I would forget to remove them and find myself walking around with them still on my face. This is very quickly brought home when coming downstairs as there have been a number of timesIi almost came unstuck as my range and judgement of distance was impaired. I have formed the (bad) habit of simply flipping them up onto the top of my head, forgetting they are there and then losing my temper because I can't find them. It pleases Carol greatly when she points out where they are.
God, I hate these ruddy things and if ever there was a Genie who could grant me just one wish, it would be to have the good eyesight I had years ago. I used to be able to change the chips on servo boards and service radio gear at one time, now I can't focus on the chip, let alone the soldering!!

I find varifocals great.

I also wear contacts, but with a difference, the one for my left eye lets me see clearly over long distance, and my right lense lets me read - took some getting used to but it was worth the effort.

And, yes, its ok for driving!

Though of course you do loose your binocular vision (depth perception) and your field of view is reduced as you only have 1 distance eye. Whilst its legal to drive a car with one eye, its well worth having a pair of glasses in the car that you wear over your contacts to allow you to see distance with your "reading" eye as well.

Being serious tho its a good job she did insist on me getting my eyes tested , how bad would they have got before i did something about it , i suppose the change is so gradual that you dont pick up on it , my wife has always had regular eye test as her mother suffers from glaucoma but it was just something that i hadnt given much thought too but those days are over i agree with all it is so important to look after your eyes as you only get one pair !!

I have always wore eye glasses, In my 40s I started having problems with reading and bifocals were recommended. I picked them up at a shop at the large shopping mall and was told to wander around a bit before driving to adjust to them. While wandering I had a pretty young lady come up and ask me the time, well I raised my arm to look at my watch, not only did the glasses bring the watch into focus, but also the young ladies tube top encased well endowed chest. Well I turned red in the face and stuttered out the time, I am sure the young lady thought I was a bumbling idiot. Since then I have adjusted quite well to bifocals.

Not so - at least not for me. I have a varifiocal lens in my left eye and a lens just for long distance vision in my right eye. I have no loss of depth perception. I can read the bottom line of the chart at the opticians with both my left and right eye individually.

I've worn varifocals for a number of years now, and I find them marvellous. Mine are also light sensitive, so I don't need prescription sunglasses.

I can't beleive I managed without glasses now- when I went to the opticians I too thought there couldn't be much wrong- however she found I was short sighted in one eye, long in the other and had a slight astigmatism (boggle eyed)!!!!!!!

Just the opposite with me.... after wearing glasses for 45 years I was diagnosed with cataracts in both eyes, the specialist said they could easily remove them and install implants which would leave me only needing glasses for reading. I was absolutely stunned... didn't know it could be done... and all on the NHS .. Now I can cope extremely well with just the "el cheapo" reading specs from Tesco's.
Life is fantastic again and so is the NHS!!!    :-))  :-))  :-))

Yep that would work for distance, but if you had a reading lens in one eye and distance in the other, you sacrifice binocular vision.
