One of my favourite football quotes was from BB.

BB walked up to a referee who he thought was particularly bad and asked " Ref can I get sent off for what I am thinking/"

No replied the ref.
BB walked away and loud enough for the ref to hear said " In that case I think you are a useless b$$tard"

Billy was a proper footballer. He would cringe looking at today's breed of cheating, malingering, overpaid morons that play the game !!

He played for the enemy, but was very well respected..

Yea i think if he hadn't played for us the much maligned dirty Leeds he would probably have been recognised as one of the best players in the world in his prime.I remember him giving Brazil a cpl of footballing lessons when playing for the old enemy.

When I was a teenager I used to go to Elland Road one week, and Hillsborough the other.
The Owls were my local club and Leeds the glamour club.BB was indeed one of the best players that I saw, and that included some great players like George Best,Jimmy Greaves, Derek Dougan
Gordon Banks,Bobby Moore,Chopper Harris, both Charlton brothers, Dennis Law,Toshack,Emlyn Hughes, Kevin Keegan et al.
What wages could that list of players command in today's over paid premier league. Not many liked that Leeds team of the seventies, but they were good to watch and had some very skillful players.
Most defenders of that era would not last a minute in today's football with all the diving and cheating that goes on, but I know what I prefer to watch, and its not the football that is on display today. Most of the after match talk is not about the games, but about who managed to con the ref by diving or dropping like a stone when someone brushes past.At least I can say that I
saw football at its best, if I start thinking of the players that played in the 66 ,70and 74 world cups then I really start drooling.Pass me the tablets and the rose tinted glasses.Thats better, blood pressure going down.
Rant over.

Your not wrong mate in those days football was a contact sport and sure sometimes it went over the top at times but you never saw any of them getting injured either, unlike today they get injured walking from the tunell onto the pitch  %)..The dirty Leeds tag started with the southern newspapers of the time and the Sun still hate us today,JEALOUSY i call it because from the late 60s-early 70s we had the best of the lot we could mix it with the likes of chopper Harris ,Ron Yates and the likes and play the beautiful game better than most too.I think the only reason we didn't walk away with every league title in those times is because we were allways in every cup going for honours and in those days we played more games plus there was allways 6-7 teams challenging for honours unlike nowadays.
As for Europe forget the champions league thats a rigged competition to help the bigger clubs get to the final unlike the old days when the European cup was a knockout competition ,mind you cheating went on on a massive scale in those days too bribery and corruption etc.I wathced the game we played v bayern munich the other day on utube and it still hurts to see that pen not given on Clarke and the disallowed goal by Lorimer ,we would have won that game easy. That ref has since been charged with accepting bribes and even admitted that game was rigged yet Leeds still haven't been given that cup which they should have been when the other team and ref have been shown to have cheated.Off my soap box now lol.

PS i remember reading George Bests book some yrs ago and he said he hated seeing Paul Reeneys name on the team sheet because the guy stuck to him like glue and he never had a good game against Leeds.
how the game should be played

My brothers team was Leeds & mine was Chelsea although we should have both gone for Crystal Palace (our local team). I still remember a game in the early 70s where Leeds had the ball for what seemed like an eternity and past it to all the players while the opposition (Sunderland) could do nothing but spectate. Goals a plenty in those days when you had 5 forwards 3 midfield and 2 backs what an era and wee Billy was one of the best (dont let my brother ever hear me say that) {-) {-) {-)

Lol the Leeds Chelsea games were wars in those days ,not to mention what went on outside the grounds   <*< lol. Some of the players from that era were simply unbelievable in fact the modern players of today dont hold a candle to them for shear skill and comitment. The grass was also a lot shorter in those days too lol.

I remember the Leeds fans at our school going nuts about Billy Bremner back in the early seventies.

I watched the DVD "The Damned United" last week.

Film about Brian Clough and the events leading up to, during, and after his 44 days at Leeds United.
I am not a big footy fan, but I enjoyed it. My wife enjoyed it and she isn't British, nor does she understand football.

Yea its a good film even for non footy fans,it certainly painted Clough in a bad light,i thought the bit when he called Revie up in the early hrs to blame Leeds for costing him the European cup was classic  {-).I'm a Leeds fan born and bred but im also a true football fan and ill acknowledge talent no matter what shirt they wear and the late 60s-mid 70s was a golden era for football worldwide. There were some true world class home grown players in those days while you can count on the fingers of one hand the true world class players we have today in fact i cant think of five if im honest. The Rooney's,Lampards,Gerrard's wouldn't even get in the sides of that era. They say footballers are fitter now but thats rubbish, they spend most of the time injured yet the games soft, theres no tackling in the game anymore which is a shame.

A sign of the times perhaps, but it was amusing to see all the first class players striking up a cigarette regularly. Booth in training and off the pitch. Something we wouldn't see athletes doing today.
Perhaps it was all those coffin nails that made the players so 'hard'.

...Hi Guys...

I can remember watching Scotland as a boy and that was the only time i could see Billy Bremner who was a boyhood Hero of mine...

My son took me to Rugby Park to watch Kilmarnock play Hearts the other week...This was part of my 50th Birthday Present from him...

As usual Killie played well, were the better team for most of the game, But still lost 2-1...

The Highlight of the Game for me was a Half -Time appearance by The Killie Legends...To see my real Boy hood Hero again...Tommy McLean...and to shake his hand as he walked off the pitch was Great...

...Best Regards...Norry...

I can remember the late 60s early 70s era when a striker like George Best would have the ball heading for the box and a defender would make a tackle and the striker would stumble then pick himself up and chase the defender for the ball. No rolling on the ground no appeal for penalty the most important thing was possesion of the ball so you could have a shot at goal. It has become clinical the art of diving, i am sure that the must run training sessions on diving.

Some of the greats that I remember were Peter Osgood and Ian Hutchison (The long throw in specialist) :-)) :-)) and Alan Clark the lanky Leeds player. Which brings me to a question, every year must bring a close to the careers of so many professional football players, what happens to them?? I know the old tale that they would open a pub or a sports shop but how many pubs and sports shops are there and the life expectancy of a lower division manager is very short 5 losses in a row and your gone.

Happy memories of Brian Moore and The Big Match.
Regards David
