Shipping Hull etc. worldwide?
« on: December 17, 2009, 10:20:40 am »

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to get hulls sent around the world at reasonable prices. I had some email conversations with Andy earlier in the year and would kave liked to order one or perhaps two hulls from him but the best deal he could come up with was 185pounds freight. Kingston managed to do a larger parcel for 155pounds so I went with theirs but there are still models in the Models by Design range that I am interested in. Any ideas on where to get the best deals would be most welcome. Thanks, Ian.

As an example, I think it's AMG in Australia will ship world wide. They cut the hulls into two or three lengths to reduce the size of box being shipped. Have you asked Andy if this is an option?

Kiwimodeller,
Try this website.  Don't know whether they can arrange shipping to NZ but certainly worth a try.

Shipping parcels to NZ is something I do all the time (it's where I'm from after all). £185 is a helll of a lot of money becaue they will be sent Airmail. If you can be bothered to wait for it to be shipped surface mail there are lots of companys the specialise in send stuff from here (uk) to NZ. It takes about 12 weeks but they will be a hell of a lot cheaper.
For example I just sent 2 of my surfboards home and I was charged £60 for both. They are a hell of a lot bigger and heavier (and worth more money) then model boat hulls.

It just depends on how quickly you want them..

Thanks for all the tips and I will try some of them out after Xmas. There are several of us in the Model Boat Group who are interested so we can combine an order. Wasyl can you let me know the company you used for sea freight? There is no hurry but when I suggested sea freight to Models by Design Andy said there were minimums involved which made it no cheaper. Cheers and Merry Xmas, Ian.

Hi Ian,as i said in my post I used FedEx, I opened an account with them, they did ask how frequently i shipped.I told them 2 or 3 times a month? there is no joining fee,my first shipment went to CA, in the US,my 2nd to Florida, then to Oz, they collect and deliver, most of my shipments were in excess of 75kg,and all are done via air freight, hope this helps

Just type in  'Interparcel' and go onto their website, it's easy, they are the agents for all the carriers and you can take your pick from the many options available found there. I ship all the submarines with this company, they are very good and utterly reliable.
Shipping around the world is expensive, there is no way around it I'm afraid. Make sure your packaging is very substantial, the subs are  heavy objects so I make purpose built boxes for them and fill them with loads of bubblewrap.
I have learned over the years that packaging for such items is quite a specialised job and takes a heck of a lot of time to do... but you must get it right as there is nothing worse than having to rectify damage. Fortunately this is exceedingly rare provided you are very thorough.

Sorry, I was not looking properly at who wrote what! It was Johnny Shoreboy who suggested sea freight and I would like to follow that up if possible. Models by Design did not seem to think it could be done and when I enquired at this end the shipping company I talked to said it would have to be arranged from that end and I should get a UK agent!

@Kiwimodeller:
Let me know when you want to start shipping stuff and I'll give you a list of companies you can try. There are about 12 I can think of off the top of my head who specialise in shipping to NZ/Oz and they all compete against each other to give you the customer the best deal. They are basically excess backage compainies but there are deals to be had and I have used them a lot to ship surfboards/BMX bikes/Snowboards and other bits and bobs to NZ and Oz.

NZ customs has some strange import laws these days so there is a chance they may charge GST your end when the goods arrive. Anyway. let me know when you want to start shiiping stuff and I help you out form this end.

Thanks, I will talk to the rest of the guys at the first sailing day in Jan. Several have expressed an interest in buying hulls in the past but each time we have enquired the freight has been more than the cost of the hulls. I am a starter for a 50" Picket Boat with the boiler cover from Models by Design but at around GBP100 and then another 185P for freight it was just too expensive. If there is enough interest at the group to get two or three in a box and the freight comes down then it is worth doing. NZ Customs is no problem, I have an importer code. Usually they do not bother me about GST until the value gets over $1000 although occaisionally they get picky! Will be in touch when we have dimensions and weights. Cheers, Ian.

hi ian. i got my hull from models by design. he cut it in half and i cant remember freight costs but it was nothing like what you were saying. andy even put in  glass bulkheads at the join so all i had to do was drill, bolt and glass together. the join is hardly noticeable. maybe that was a lot of extra work and not worth him doing it again. worth a try to ask him though.  craig.

That is a good idea, I could even glass it permanently back together if neccessary. I have one guy interested in sharing freight and am going to a big sailing day on Feb 7th where I will ask around again. If I could get three hulls for the same freight it would make things much more reasonable. Will keep working on it and then go back to them. Thanks, Ian.

Local post office is cheapest i sent a 4ft  hull to CANADA for £85 that includes insurance and tracking, dont believe all that shipping companys tell you they will rob you blind if you let them.
