Newbie question please (epoxy, lacquer, varnish .???)
« on: December 05, 2006, 09:54:32 pm »

Thanks for reading this.
Ive just got hold of a 30 year old wooden boat from ebay, i beleive based on the seaqueen or seafearer model.

I want to repaint it, now ive got 3 large tins of HUMBROL Enamel DIY paint providing i give it plenty of coats and i key each coat with wet n dry before applying another coat will this paint waterproof the boat or should i get a lacquer / varnish to coat it with.?

Im confused with all the different types, i here people talking about 2 part epoxies, lacquers and varnishes and i've no idea what to go for.
Im not bothered too much about the finnish i just want something thats going to be hard waring and waterproof.
Any pointers to good suppliers too please (if forum rules allow.?)

Many thanks in advance for any advice please.

Whatever you do to the outside - and standard DIY paints are probably not the best answer; get some specialist yacht paints and varnish -  give the inside of the hull a good coat of resin. Get this from your friendly local modelshop -  the aircraft boys use it for putting a smooth finish on their mainplanes. I use a two-part product called Z-poxy.

Sorry Rickf but yuo are not correct in whta you are saying any ordinary exterior paint will give any wood a good protective finish, what I woul dersonally do is as follows
1 Don't brush paint but spray with PLASTICOAT aerosols available from B+Q or Halfords
2 Preparation rub down with 180 grit paper Dry
3 Apply primer
4 400 girt lightly all over DRY
5 Paint with your colour you DO NOT need to varnish or laquer this product and it dries is approx 40 mins

As for waterproofing the hull as RickF says coat the inside with resin easily available in 1ltr cans with catalist from most good motor factors don't bother with Halfords too expensive!!!!
Mix resin up with the catalist pour into hull turn hull slowly through 360 degrees and pour off excess, simple and easy to do.
