I'm another fan of the Mute button, but has it struck anyone how well the ad men have done with that appalling Go Compare ad? You see, the whole point of advertising is to make the victim remember the product. Like it or hate it, that advert has had the desired effect.
Now contrast that with some of the "best" adverts of the decade (TV program over the weekend in the UK). I hadn't seen half of them - or I don't think I had - and of those which I did remember I could only recall the product in about half of them. There must be a point to all of this.
My pet hates are furniture stores ("Don't Flaming Shout"), double-glazing, any type of insurance and, worst of all, those horribly pretentious and utterly unfathomable adverts for cosmetics. Does anyone really want  to smell of Diesel?

I don't know about you blokes but if I hate the ad <*<, I NEVER buy the product. I'm afraid they shoot themselves in the foot with irritating indoctrination ads where I'm concerned. It makes me remember the name alright and makes me avoid their product regardless of how good it is.

Yours sincerely... grumpy ole git.

Agreed about the howling, bawling double glazing buffoon (bring back mass public hanging, he didn't do it on his own), the first insurance tenner had a certain grotesque genius, the later ones rather less, but my personal pit of total detestation goes to the past Cillit Bang ads.  Their ads have improved, sort of, but I have a long memory for such things, and still actively avoid the product.
Then there are the "story" ads like Kenco and BT, but these are very minor annoyances.
My personal favourite ad was the Carling Black Label ad that spoofed most of the K-Tel ads and was almost a feature film in itself.

There is a re-mix of the Cillit Bang advert by Yakazoo on you-tube, it's better than the original and very cleverly put together.
The same bloke did one for the Michael Winner Esure insurance ad. Persnally the music is not my favorite choice but the re-mix is very good.. worth a look just for fun.

At least that one with half naked old pop star has stopped. Male nudity should be banned anyway, where's Mary Whitehouse when she's needed.

She's been in exactly the right place since November 2001  <:(
Rumour has it she expired in a black apoplexy when someone explained the lyrics of "Brown Sugar" to her.............. I don't think she ever heard of Iggy Pop (or he her....)
As for Barry 'Cillit Bang' Scott, his mam still does our cleaning.

There used to be an ad for....something... in the 70's I think and the tag line was;

"That's all right for you boys, but real men"... or something like that.

I found myself using the tag line from time to time but now I can't remember what the hell it was for?!?!?!

.... jog anyone's memory?

Ah, that takes me back. I spent the first few years of my working life deep underground in an installation designed to take two nuclear hits (mind you, we would have been targeted with a lot more...)

The rat advert with fake medicine is designed to annoy and is memorable.
They want you to remember.

People are so hard up they look for cheap sources of meds on the net. But with international unregulated suppiers there are crooks. And people die. Shocking? that is why the ad is desinged to shock.

I live in China where fake milk and baby formala killed kids and made 300 000 people ill last year. It is not just China, it is many countries. And people are buying stuff from fake dealers globally on the internet.

Key thought, it may be annoying but do you remember the message. If you remember it works.

Where it does not work is if the ad is for a product, and you say, 'I am so annoyed I will not buy'. But like the spray fragrance on geek with the fit bird. If you think it is bad, you are not the target audience, you are probably one of the 'Hi-Karate' generation. Remember that one?

They also want to maintain a monopoly supply. If a medicine that might prolong your life is not available on the NHS you are effectively banned from taking it. Adverts like the one you mention keep us in line....

yes but the rat advert tends to be on at midnight snack time, it's keeping me thin.

and the milk powder scam , i think they have the right way of dealing with people who put others lives at risk and its very cheap, and does not req probation officers etc.

A good way to avoid adverts is to record the programmes you want to watch, and then fast forwards through the breaks.
The only drawback with this method is you have to subscribe to Mr Murdoch's or Mr Branson's services. {:-{ {:-{ {:-{

There was an article in the news a few months back. Something like 50% of the internet sourced meds bought in the US were fake. It is a huge problem. It is a dangerous problem. People usually take mds for a reason, if you are getting fake product, you are not getting your meds. Rat poison or no rat poison, this is dangerous. Whatever the motives of the people paying for the adverts, people need to know, IMHO.
