Can anyone remember the name of the earlier versions of 'Autocad'?
There used to be one a few years ago that could draw in ISO mode and didnt require a degree in rocket science to operate...

"Lite"? It had the 2D facilities of the full AutoCAD but didn't do 3D.

No...it was before they started calling it Autocad at all FLJ? Maybe 10 yrs ago now.

I had a go at autocad at college, first tutor was execllent and I was making good progress, he left...new teacher who was only interested in the stars in the class...exit stage left!

Hi BP,
Sorry mate, but Autocad has always been called just that. Have been using it for work since version 2.8, some 24 years.
Your not thinking of "TurboCad" or the other Autocad copy, "Intellicad" (by ex Autocad developers). These would be of about the right time frame.
As FLJ stated AutocadLite, is the only other "Autocad" product which is 2D.
There are, and have been so many 2D similar products, that some more clues would be nice to narrow the quest somewhat.
cheers

Can anyone recomend a simple CAD package that could be used to develop a set of hull lines?

Are you thinking about Autosketch? This actually came after ACAD R14

Aye....that sounds familiar Mr Wombat, although I think there may be an Autocad version called that as well, I'll now go and have a look for a copy that...Thanks!  :-))

Good one Wombat, had forgotten "autosketch". This is probably what Bill was looking for and it was by Autodesk.
A quick word on "Delftship"
The latest free version doesn't do plate developments, but the Pro version does.
The earliest versions of Delftship did do plate developments, but finding an early version to download is a little like hens teeth.
BUT, a program called "freeship" which is what Delftship was called before being further developed does do plate developments. It just doesn't do the extra hydro- calcs and fancy extras for full size craft. AND its available for free download in all its versions. (google it)
But hey, for us modellers we don't need all that theoretical stuff.
I use both of the 'free' versions, but for different applications depending on what I'm looking for as an end product.
One day will upgrade to "Delftship-pro", when my little lady (chief accountant) approves the purchase.
Both Freeship and Delftship use the same tutorials
cheers

Got 'Autosketch'.....but I think its an earlier version of it I need?

As I remember the thing I was using was very much like this...very much. But it could also do an ISO view, Im sure this version or the nearest lloking to it came right after the one I want. Autosketch is correct, its when it moves to Autodesk that it stopped doing what I wanted for some reason, this is fine though, wish I could use that Google Sketchup as easy.

Hi BP,
Google Sketchup, the free version, in the latest release is quite powerful, but unfortunately, doesn't allow the add-ons which turn it into a very useful tool.
Sketchup-Pro (the one you have to pay for) comes with all the add-ons. One of the young guys at work uses it for presentation previews to impress the clients, at prelim stage. Very good, very quick.
I have ordered a copy of Sketchup Pro + add-ons for myself to produce instruction sheets for my pending kitsets, and other things. A lot cheaper than the 3D modeller I'm slowly, painfully learning.
If I remember correctly Autocad-lite supports iso view, even though it will not draw or modify in 3D.
As to the deletion of features once Autodesk got their hands on it, this seems a common happening with relatively cheap good software.
Best of luck

Is it Quickcad you were thinking of?
Its software by Autodesk who do Autocad.
There is also Autocad LT which is the "lite" cut down version of the full blown Autocad.

You could have a look at this,

http://sketchup.google.com/index.html

I used it at my last place of work and it's really good. My friend even designed his house using it.

I think you mean Generic Cad. This was Autodesk's first try. It was a 2D package but as you said was ISO friendly.
I remember this well as in those days Cad people were stuck in dark places out of the way.

GENERIC CADD was a great old program.  I still have version 6.2 on an old computer.  Used it for many many years.  Now use TurboCAD 16..5     ironman
