Model Slipway's Maggie M Build
« on: December 30, 2009, 04:54:49 pm »

Today I got my new shelves fitted in my workroom and have now had a good tidy up.

By the time I had done all this I just had time to open up the Maggie M box and see what goodies were inside.

There was a rather excellent hull which is up to Model Slipways extremely high standard.

There was also a comprehensive instruction book and drawings, loads of nice clean white metal fittings and sheets of CNC cut and printed styrene.

Theres an MFA geared motor with coupling and brass prop, prop shaft and all the sundry brass wire, dowel etc.

Sorry to hear that your health isn't too good at the moment Richard, we'll wait a day or two for you to finish Maggie M! You take your time, when you're ready, don't overdo things. Hope the New Year is good for you and your wife.

Best wishes,

Danny

Not wishing to high-jack the the thread, but it might help Richard later...
The side hatch is shown with a hydraulic ram to open it, but it is also conected to the fixed boom, and winch, now as shown in the plans the ram goes through the rails and I don't see how it could lift the hatch.

The central hatch seems to have no way of opening it, hook or ram, just man power?

That hook would be for lifting the cod end full of fish aboard the real vessel and not the hatch the hydraulic ram would lift the hatch open as in real fishing vessels  yet have known a few to have to manually  lift the hatch to the fish hopper and have done so personally the winch that you mention is a boom swinger/landing winch  hope that clears things up a bit

SKYE WULLIE

ANY questions on the workings of a fishing vessel myself and Davie T are always a pm awayto try and explain things have worked aboard trawlers we know a wee bit about them  :-))

Anyway back to the build.
Today I cut the openings in the hull for the steps.
I then fitted the prop shaft, kort nozzle and becker rudder.
Finally tried the brass prop and it fits without touching the kort nozzle. Phew !

looking good so far!
i am also building this kit but i packed it away until christmas and new year passed so i will be starting building it again,
I started building mine in the wrong order because i was scared i would mess up with the rudder, kort nozzle etc. So when i get the kit back out again i will start from the beginning again.
I was on the Model Slipway site today and i noticed the maggie m wasn't on, have they stopped making this kit?

I look forward to your future posts cheers

Not stopped just reworking the kit I think. Putting all of the plastic sheet components into a CAD program so they can be laser cut to order instead of holding onto a large stock of pre-printed sheets as far as I know. Still got my kit in the cupboard , was going to build it as either the Andromeda II INS or Ardent II INS seine net versions but not made a start yet

Oh yea that would be a better way of producing the sheets, free up some storage space.
Im building mine as the Defiant LK.371 so there is quite a few alterations to be made, hopefully will get it finished eventually just need to find the spare time to work on it!

Today I did the side steps in the hull and the servo for the rudder, doesn't seem much but took most of the day.

Thanks Ken

Today I made up the deck supporting beams and fitted them and the 3mm strip round the inside of the hull to support the deck.

If you are building one of these kits you should note that the deck will give you the finished width of the hull.

I had to fit the deck beams by widening the hull by approximately 20mm.

Hi Richard. Seeing as we are both building the same boat, and you being the experienced modeller  O0, This is only my second kit so I am hanging fire now until you get in front. (just glued my forward deck in place)
So don't miss anything out  and then my build will go as smoothly as yours  :-))

You seem to be doing alright so far Alan.

I'm not doing this boat as fast as the others as I am having a bit of trouble with my breathing at the moment. This limits the time I can spend sniffing glue and epoxy at the moment. :embarrassed:

Haven't done to much as I have been waiting for my epoxy to be delivered.

While I was waiting I have assembled the white metal winches.

Any way the epoxy turned up this afternoon so I have now fixed the deck.

I shall leave this taped down till tomorrow to give it time to set up.

The decks having set up I have now done the coamings and have started on the rear hatch.

The drawings and instructions were a little vague concerning these so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

The next job will be the fish pools.

Richard,

I ,love it. A great subject, beautifully built so far. Have you thought about writing a book with all your builds in? You could use all your posts on Mayhem, so not too much writing involved. It would be a superb reference book for kit builders..
