I used to have one of these, same idea but in clockwork. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r50TUTgUYA
Modern ones are electric, the switching is a little different though.

I made one a few years ago for an old boss.
He loved these kind of things, as his uncle used to make strange useless mechanical things.

How about some practical applications for model boats, like . . .

a)    Have your master control switch visible on the deck, and with a group of fellow enthusiasts standing around, switch it on and wait for the cargo hatch to open and a small hand to pop out to turn it off. "That shouldn't happen !" you say, and keep repeating. (Actually not the REAL on/off switch for your boat).

b)    A perpetual motion machine would be ideal for trickle charging LiPo batteries in situ, giving you indefinite run time (providing you don't use too much throttle of course.)

Scaling up the flask engine, would mean that the force to generate energy say like a hydro plant means that the amount of water in the reservoir could be the ocean and a turbine in a tube prior to discharging into the sea again, though i wonder if anyone has tried this.

What needs to be noted in the flask engine, would be the blue liquid bubbling at the low
point as the flask is being filled. The liquid hasn't even gone down the tube yet, so the
bubbling bit of liquid is indicative of a small pump hidden in the base. :o
So even with the ocean as  resevoir, the system won't work as "shown".

There have been successful experiments with temperature differential in the ocean.

That would be a classic for the 'Do Not Push This Button' type pranks.

One of the "other suggestions" on Martin's link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2WTP36fxCYs - some truly awesome engineering.
