Motor noise
« on: January 08, 2010, 02:04:14 pm »

Hi,  Could anyone help with a problem I'm having with a high pitch whistle from my motor, I have a 7.2v  3300 battery with a 10 amp. fuse on the Pos. feed,to a 15v m'tronik's viper ESC. (not plug and play) with a Spektrum AR500 R/X,running a 6v--12v no name motor with capasitors and one Hi-tec servo for the rudder, having gone through all the set up procedures all seem's to work o.k. except for a high pitch whistle or squeel from the motor when running forward or astern, the noise starts as soon as I move the stick even before the motor start's to turn.
Any help will be much appreciated.

All my motors equipped with mtroniks esc's (and some others) squeal at lower revs, it usually gets quieter when the motor speeds up

Hi Clinker,

Fact of life, I am afraid - it is a consequence of the way an electronic ESC works.  The whistle is caused by the controller switching the power on and off to control the speed. You notice most before the motor starts, but it shold decrease as the motor speed increases.

Thank you Wombat and Andygh for that reply, being a newby to the world of R/C I'm still not to up on what sounds are normal and the one's that you hear just before the blue smoke and fizzle, with the AR500 being designed for aircraft model's does it matter where I plug my ESC. and servo in, for example would it be better to plug into the elev.rather than the aile. socket or can I just plug into anyone as long as it work's.
  many thank's

If the motor is nice and quiet run if direct off a battery, then all is OK.  Otherwise something needs oiling or adjusting.
In a basic two channel setup, your left thumb usually works the throttle, the right the steering.  This is conventionally Channel 2 and 1 in that order.  As long as the expected control function happens in response to your stick movements, all is well.

I just noticed you say your equipment is designed for aircraft.

I hope you are not using the 35MHz frequency as this is strictly for aircraft.

Sorry I should have said I am using the Spektrum Dx5e, did'nt mean to start a domestic amongst the brotherhood !!!,anyhow just been running the motor again and this whistle or squeel is just as loud on any throttle setting, i do realise when the model is in the water with the lid on it will make less noise, but it do'es seem loud,I going to try it with another motor to see if it improves matters.

Hi,   I have changed my motor's over, there is much less noise now and as you said it do'es get a little quieter when the motor is in higher rev's, many thank's for your advise, and many thank's to all those that contribute to this brilliant web site.
