Tug superstructure colour??
« on: March 12, 2010, 08:38:03 pm »

Can anyone tell me what the best paint is for the rich brown colour seen on some older tugs upperworks? I have tried a few different paints, but never got it right. The picture shows to sort of colour I'm after.... All suggestions gratefully received, clean ones at any rate..... :D :D....Smudge

Hiya Smudge,

Yes, I've found brown does not have a wide choice in the Humbrol range.

I mixed my own and kept it in an airtight pot. Start with a light brown and add small amounts of black until you get the shade you want. The choice is then to your liking.

Hope this helps

Ken

Not sure if it is still available but Humbrol No: 133 Satin Brown is the one!

Hy Smudge
I use Humbrol no 9 on my tugs, it is a gloss, but when it is all dry I give it a coat of satin spray varnish.

Hi Smudge
Here’s a photo of the Ironsider that I built, I don’t think the colour is that far away from the colour you are looking for. (Humbrol no9)

If you havr a B&Q near you go the section where they mix paint and get some   "Bulrush" made up you can get it in Matt,Satin,or gloss this is the one that I use all the time.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I have got some Humbrol #9, thats too orangy for what I'm after..Getting Humbrol #133 in a backwoods place like Yeovil is a non starter, but I will be visiting Bristol this next week, should do better there. Dicky, your Plus-cote Butterscotch still looks a bit orange to me,  I still have to try the Bullrush from B & Q...I will keep my fingers crossed......... {:-{.....Smudge
