H & S -again!(and engine counters)
« on: January 20, 2010, 05:43:52 pm »

Went down to our local Museum this afternoon to take some photos of Harding's Patent Engine Counter. It was rather wet and muddy and the museum has a light green carpet, so I told the curator they should have a doormat. They're not allowed to - in case someone trips over it!

PS any experts on engine counters here?

Just looked in my car 1 engine
My wifes car 1 engine
The train that just went past 2 engines
Why would you need a machine to count engines?
Or is it an engine hours counter?
Please enlighten this old thicko!

Haven't done anything for a week Ned. I have cellulitus again and have legs twice their normal size. Have had to sit with my legs up all week and take antibiotics. >>:-(

Also I gather used on Marine engines too, but originally uised to count the strokes of (beam) pumping engines so that Boulton and Watt could work out how much coal the owner had saved by using one of their engines as opposed to those wasteful old Newcomen engines, and so charge the correct rental for the engine. Here's picture of the one in our museum.

Looks like it has been clocked!
Did they have Arthur Daleys inthose days?

no - that's nine million and 2540 strokes, probably!
Mind you, I tried to persuade them to rig it to the door to count the visitors, but they said they'd already got something to do that - a nasty little electronic plastic box wtih no brass or copper on it at all.
