Vliestroom - Dutch Buoy Laying Vessel
« on: December 14, 2006, 05:31:26 pm »

Hi Everyone,

Just thought I'd post a few pictures of my just finished model on the forum.
[Built from a Model Slipway kit over a period of 3 years (on & off).

Fibreglass hull, ABS deck and superstructure. Most of the fittings supplied were white metal. Where possible I've changed to plastic in order to save weight.

The working crane which will place and retrieve the buoys on the model is operated by a 4 channel keyfob arrangement on 433 Mhz. (didnt want to run the risk of interference smashing up the crane).

Working radar and lights. I've had to use a little bit of modellers licence in order to get the various functions working.  The buoys in the photos are not part of the kit but as they flash and are watertight I just had to use them.

Steerage is by 2 x steerable kort nozzles (these needed very accurate setting up as they need to rotate whilst the propellor inside still turns and doesnt fowl anything). A working bow thruster is mixed to the rudder channel on the Tx for tighter turns.

I just need to ballast the model and check out the motor power etc before maiden voyage in the Spring.

Cheers, Terry. (Phew ! Finished it at last).

Super job, well done.

I echo the comment about you having executed an excellent paint job. I would also add, that you have some of the most lifelike crew (in believable poses) that I have seen in a long time. In other words, I think you have a prize winner there.

The majority of the paintwork was sprayed. The hull with car paint (waterline was acheived using fine tamiya masking tape, its only 6mm wide so moulds well around curves).  The superstructure was airbrushed before any fittings and glazing were applied. Smaller parts were brush painted.

I ran out of paint for the superstructure 75% of the way through the build and found out that the colour had been discontinued by Humbrol.  :o   After a bit of digging on the internet I managed to locate a source and stocked up just in case I need to do any touch ups later.

I'll post some photos once Ive got her bottom wet so to speak.  ::)

A beautiful job, well done Terry.

I agree with Roger - this must be a prize winner.

Superb boat, Terry.  What a great job you have done.   8)

I shall keep referring to your pictures as I have also purchased this model and it's waiting in the wings.

Have you thought of doing a blog ?

If I had a car like that I wouldn't take it through Tissington Ford - I think twice before going through with my 4x4 ;D

That's right, it's an Austin Healey 100/4. Both a modeller and an old car enthusiast, what a combination.

Know exactly what you mean!  ;) Drumbeat is nearing completion now.........................at last!

Why dont you send your pics to Slipway? Im sure they'd love to put them in the gallery as there doesn't seem to be many of Vliestroom.

Hi Justboatonic,

Hope to see some photos of your completed boat on the forum once finished.

I've received some positive feedback from Model Slipway since posting my photos.

My only concern about publishing them on the Slipway site is that my model is not 100% to spec as far as the kit goes. As Ive explained earier on this thread, several things are a little different to the standard kit in order to get all the functions working. This could cause Slipway a few problems if people see the photos then buy the kit and realise that something shown in the photos is not included in the original kit if you get my drift. Apart from that I dont have a problem.

My next project is the Small Rescue boat from Model Slipway.
Good luck with your Drumbeat.

Terry.

Hi Terry

Dont think Slipway have any probs with this (non standard model). There are a number of models on their site like this ie some of the coasters and Envoy civilian tugs.

You could also suggest a narative saying the model has some non standard parts not included with the kit.

I posted some photos of my Drumbeat before the server problems and will post some more when I finally finish it!

Terry......again..great to hear from you !   :)

Your model looks great.....one of my pals here has the same kit but is a slower builder than even me.....he's also afflicted by doing the same day job as me....  :police:

Have you had her on the water yet?

I am considering a purchase of another Model Slipway kit......not sure which one yet though....

Cheers

Bob

Bob,

If you have a look under your last post you'll see some photos on the water during its first outing.
As you'll see I've got the crane working - using a car remote keyfob system for the crane.

Model slipway have just released details of a new tug, Dutch Courage, which looks nice.

Terry.
