Sail winch servo for throttle control ?
« on: February 01, 2010, 12:13:59 pm »

Hi, I have installed a Stuart globe valve (34-50-71532) & have been ensured by Stuart is proportional 4 turn. Now HiTek make a sail winch servo that is ....(you guessed it)...4 turn. With a nice little chain drive to the valve wheel Could I use this as a speed control ?? It would look more realistic than these other throttle control devices I see.  Are sail winches proportional ?

Any ideas/comments... Waddya think ?

Sail winches are proportional, they just use a much longer travel feedback potentiometer.

The Hitech winch is pretty powerful, so it will have no trouble turning the valve, given the right pulleys, but it is not that fast. Find yourself travelling too fast towards something and....OUCH!

Gotta be worth and experiment though, just for fun.

Good point, lemme check on the speed for full travel....  :-))

1.68 seconds per revolution, 6.72 seconds full travel. I wouldn't think the valve has a perfectly linear response over the full range so I would be operating it in a narrower band or increase the drive ratio with limit stops.. One problem is that it's a rising stem valve so the drive sprocket would most likely need to be on a slider. It's not a speedboat so it may be doable... Save me the added cost of a throttle & look more to scale too... :-))

have a look at the steam valve a lot of people are fitting these to controle steam, you only need a standard servo
