Famous people you've come across....
« on: February 01, 2010, 05:18:31 pm »

Famous people you've come across, by chance, not paid to see at show or similar..

We saw Armand  & Michaela Denis, going into a hotel in London, years ago, when I was on holiday with Mum and Dad. Older members will remember their wild life films in the 50s

Years later I saw Oliver Reid, also in London, our eyes met across the pavement, and I thought he was going to ask me to go for aa pint. Luckily we both walked on....

Passed Fred Dibnah on the M6 he was in his Land Rover going north, also passed Carl Foggerty on the M6...he was in his Jag me in the van...so he wasn't really trying

Stood behind Arthur Scargill in a queue for train tickets at Kings Cross once. Thought to myself, who is the man with a weetabix on his head?

Passed John Prescott at Westminster tube station, he was walking the other way, with some burley blokes by his side.

Went to a weekend meeting on Sunday, to a hotel outside Leeds. Carvery lunch. Who should turn up but Liz Dawn (Vera Duckworth) and family. I can only say that she looked just like Vera, but her daughters are absolute stunners.

Worked as a night porter in a hotel back in the 70s. Met Buster Bloodvessel, lovely guy, really friendly.

Had a ciggy and a pint with Bob Catley (vocals) of Magnum. Really nice guy, unassuming. He usually only smoked little ciggies like sovereign and Embassy Gold. I gave him a kingsize which messed up his voice that night.

Did some roadie work for Wishbone Ash, was not impressed by the egos.

Also been at meetings with Steven 'nobber' Norris. He is actually a very charming man. No wonder the ladies liked him.

Met Sir Norman Foster, architect, in Shanghai. Lovely man.

Tried (unsuccessfully) to teach the later-to-be Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon to march when he was in the CCF at school. He has no real reason to be so arrogant (two short planks etc).

Got drunk in our folk club and swore at Ian Campbell for charging us full concert rate for a charity gig we'd put on. A greedy champagne-socialist.

Got stoned with both Roy Harper and Al Stewart (not at the same time). Two of my favourite singer/songwriters and great company............... when stoned.

Taught Fred Wedlock the Yorkshire version of Hava Nagila. A true gentleman and a very, very funny bloke.

Nearly trod on Andrew Marr while walking past the National Gallery (he is tiny.............). He's bigger on the TV.

Was within two feet of the fabled Aneka Rice's bum at a wedding reception (it is not  tiny.............). She's nowhere on TV these days.

Went to the Scilly Isles on RMS Scillonian II with Harold Wilson on board around 1965. His wife sensibly went by chopper - it was a rough trip.
Was in a local pub a number of years ago and petted the dog of one of the other customers. It turned out to be Oliver Reed. It was the only pub in the district he hadn't been banned from at the time!
Sat in on a lecture by Pete Goss in 1997 following his rescue of the French yachtsman in the Southern Ocean - hugely impressed, there are still heroes among us.
Next to Alan Titchmarsh at the Old Gaffer's Rally at Yarmouth IoW a few years back. Not sure what he was doing there as he drives a motor boat.
Almost got knocked down by Princess Anne and security entourage at last year's Boat Show.
Had lunch with Martin Mayhem at Warwick last year!  :-))

What do you mean by famous?

Met Her Maj. she was rude and was being told what to say by an equerry with a clip board who was standing beside her. Showed no knowledge or interest in the reason she was there.

Met a guy who landed on Omaha beach, he was reserved, humble and an inspiration.

Met Edward Heath, don't think we were on the same planet.

Met a guy who survived a coal mine collapse and saved 35 of his mates. He was amazed I knew and was embarrassed at being known.

I know how I define famous.

Whilst working for Pickfords on the household removal side :

Moved and chatted to Peter Grant, manager of Led Zeppelin. Met Jimmy Page and Robert Plant when they came down in a private chopper to see him. Peter Grant used to buy us liquid lunches for the duration of the move...about eight days overall. Damn nice bloke, shame he died.
Moved and chatted to Steve Howe of Yes.
Moved Noel Redding of the Jimi Hendrix Expierence. A real nice, down to earth chap.
Moved and chatted to Mitch Mitchell of the same band. He was a good bloke...when he was sober.
Was involved with the delivery of Caroline Grace's Spitfire, met her on a couple of occasions during the job.
Used to deliver a lot of antique furniture to Tommy Cooper...he was as silly in real life as he was on stage.

Sat next to Rory Gallagher of The Taste on a flight to Cork.
Met my hero, Andy Carter of Top Fuel drag race fame at the Bexhill 100 motor show.

Had a ride with The Who's lead singer Roger Daltrey in his Range Rover whilst fishing at his lake in Sussex.

It is old to ten years in my former profession (trucker) I met with Sir Mick Jagger, who shook my hand  while I took a load of pallets of bottles of wine in his castle in Touraine (France). I only know that afterwards, when the forklift driver told me:

-You know who you just shake hands?
-I do not know ... I answered him??

-My boss, Mike Jagger!

Since I do not shower right hand! :o :o O0 O0

David Essex, the 70's 'pop star came in our shop a few years ago. Wife served Les Dawson an ice cream (or two!) down in Lytham! Met Howard Stableford (used to be on Tomorrow's World) when he was making a video for the company I worked for. I was more interested in the AS 350 he flew in on though! Bumped into Jan Molby, Stan Boardman and that Sinbad character (sat behind me during the game eating all the time. No wonder he's a fat bar steward!) at Liverpool more than once or twice.

Barry Cryer tried to teach me maths before sensibly moving on to show business. Nice man, and looked very smart in his Gunners' uniform.

After I left the RNZAF where I did my chef training I worked in various places until I ended up at the Beehive (Houses of Parliament)in the late 80s.

After a state dinner the guests would come and meet the chefs, all 6 of us and the Head stewards. Got to shake hands with a few members of Royalty from various countries, a few Presidents and Prime Ministers but the best were always the sports teams, who somehow warranted state dinners. The English,French and South African Rugby teams were cool, and knew how to drink, the English Cricket team were a good bunch too, a few of them even came down to the kitchen afterwards to help us with a keg we had left over.

I did get to cook for Cpt Mark Phillips and Tinks Pottinger a couple of times when I was Head Chef at a Regency hotel and Sir Cliff Richard, very nice man but a little strange too.

Bottom of the list:

Did some roadie work for Wishbone Ash...

Wishbone Ash??!
Aw, man... Respect!

Were you working for them back in the seventies? Were you there when they did 'Jailbait' on The Old Grey Whistle Test?
In which case you probably had noticed already the really magical way that the bassist played his snazzy 2-string 12-bar riff.
And the (original) two lead guitarists' were waaay ahead of their time. Nobody else had even heard of dual 2-part harmonies before they came along.

You're a lucky dude, dude.
By the by.... Arthur Scarface is my uncle, and I'll be telling him what you said about his barnet looking like a Weetabix...... even if it is true. O0

Famous people?
I'd once had a bit of a set-to with the bloke who allegedly stolen Francis Rossi's axe.
