Hi Portside.

Sorry if I am being a bit dense.
I can't get my head round what you want.

You say you "now need a top for it". What is it?

and "but I can't work out how to make it", is this because you don'e know what it is supposed to be either? Or you know what it is but cannot find photos/plans of a prototype.

Thankyou Ned , but was that a guess  %) . It is a model of the No5 coal hoist (well there aint any more left) at Goole , not an exact replica so i dont want any comments from rivet counters  :D .
So for all those that cant see what it is yet ,the bit i amstriggling with is the cone bit on top , i just cant get my head round it .
It may be that i am using card that is too thick , nore likely me  :} .

You could try shaping the cone out of blue core foam and wrapping in FG tissue. Use card stock for banding. Cut a hole in you 'half round' structure, then insert and fix from below (inside). Just a thought.

Or make a cone from cardstock with the some kind of ball or hemishphere at the top. and again cut a hole in the 'half round, then insert and fix from below.

That is how I might try it. But what do I know  :-X

Some blanked-off domestic soil pipes may make twin pontoons for the base and a shorter length of rainwater downcommer pipe may be a starting point for the top piece but  :((  it's a parallel tube  %) and  not gently tapered like the original section. I'm impressed with your water feature.  :}

I have just had a brief flick through the Feb 2010 Model Boats magazine and I am sure that on page No 8 is the same item in question.

Yep thats where we are  :-)) .
Slight change of plans now , as this one i am building is a floating hoist it did not have a tower or even a roof   :embarrassed: .
http://www.goole-on-the-web.org.uk/public/image/226.jpg
So this one may not have the tower yet but it will have a roof , the image in the link shows the floating hoist oposit No5 coal hoist waiting for a ship to bearth in between for loading.
But like i said it aint an exact copy ,just a representation , tonight it (the top section) has had a coat of black mat for the roof and a second coat of primer for the sides , a tin of sutable egg shell is to be picked up on sat for the timber work's .

Just a bit of an update
Paint now applied to the framework (in grey) and the roof (in matt black) ,
i also found a tin of bathroom emulsion in the shed which is not too far in colour wise from the paintwork on the real thing .
I still have not made the cone for the top but i may have a template as in the top of a road traffic cone , which i can wrap card around .
All been well i may give it a water test this week and have a few puddins towed( wheather permitting) around and under it .

Emulsion doesn't like wet weather, even though it is bathroom emulsion, you might find it will flake off if the model is subjected to constant rain - as you are in the UK it probably will be raining  {-) {-)

Rain---UK------you must have mistaken us with somewhere else......no wait thats us.
Emulsion will be fine, it will self weather/flake  look good/bad---quick spray of acrlic varnish will help.

Great idea though, some pics on the water please, might need to pinch your idea if you don't mind  %)

Which one Phil , the paint or the hoist ? . Jim i dont think there will be a problem with rain on the roof as it will have a clear coat on when its finished and the frame work is painted with a gloss type acrylic i think as i had to thin it down , i am now looking for one of those mini road cones for a mold to make the top out of as i still cant get my head round the thing . Phil the pontoons were originally part of a floating oil rig and were about to be thrown away , since then they had been made into barges , there is still one left in the light house at the pond .
