SS Gairsoppa
« on: February 15, 2010, 12:31:51 pm »

I had never heard of the SS Gairsoppa before I read this but it looks like there is a great - if tragic - story behind it.
God knows what those lads felt, particularly those working below the waterline, when they knew that a torpedo strike was almost inevitable.

Just as matter of interest, the Gairsoppa (there are several variations in the spelling) took its name from a spectacular waterfall on the Sharavati River in what is now the South Indian state of Karnataka. They are better known these days as the Jog Falls.

The river plunges 250m in four separate falls into a wooded ravine. Reasonably accessible from Goa by hire car, or bus if you're a masochist, and well worth a visit. You can walk down to the deep pool at the bottom, but watch out for leeches!

Well worth a visit. Places to stay and eat nearby, a bit basic when I last visited during my hippy/travel writer days.

But it keeps 'em on the knife.
