Some boats from South China - 4 fishing boats
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:29:23 am »

The main type of large fishing vessel seemed to have an array of lamps on the side. I don't know if they are lamps or just floats. I have no idea what they fished for. Perhaps someone here can come up with some ideas.

Squid jiggers?

The local inshore fishermen used, what in some cases, amounted to only a bamboo raft with oars.
Some with outboards that were brown with rust.

They used bundles of expanded polystyrene wrapped in nets as floats and appeared to use a coralling type of net with about a 2mm mesh size. A lot of the fish are small and I guess these went into the local delicacy of fishball soup.
But there are over 90 species of shell fish eaten locally as well.

And some of the men fishing.
They are only about 100-200m off the beach.

some other small boats

I can only guess that the last boat is being used as an unlicensed ferry.

Hy TT
Maybe the boat with the light,s is being used to fish for squid at night. Sqid are attracted to lights and the fishermen use jig,s  ( a shiny weight with protuding spikes) to fish for them, but then again most fish are attracted by light, so I am probably way out on that one.

Those are squid boats, their larger cousins fish around New Zealand and the bulbs are constantly washing up on beaches as they just toss them overboard when they change them.
Due to New Zealand's exclusion zone, which if I remember correctly is 200 miles, means we have had plenty of chances to see these boats up close as our navy keeps hauling them in for infractions.
The ship gets sold and the crew gets shipped back to their country of origin, if their company wants them back that is.

Given the nature of these boats, I think that's plenty far enough.  :-))
