Well I just won it, should be coming Monday :-))

The U-boat was apparently made by Supermodels.

Jolly good. Welcome to the dark side!

Perhaps you might want to look at 'Perry' boats for inspiration for your boat- it looks like it has lots of potential. I can post some reference pictures up if you like.

I remember the Supermodels Type VII.

I do like the Perry boats, 6705Russel (on here) had a TT Neptune on ebay that was dressed as one.

I like the look of that Russian MIR DSRV, almost the right dimensions and has a nice paint scheme. Going to attach a couple of waterproof torches to those rails down the side - want to do some underwater filming but our lake isn't quite as clear as your pool...

I have some drawings of the Mir submersible tucked away. It's a somewhat different shape to the DSRV- teardrop as opposed to cylindrical.

The converted Neptune was buot by Colin Stevens, using some reference material fro  me. What Colin did was somewhere between the Perry submersibles and the Delta Oceanographics submersibles. Looked great didn't it.

That's a lot more teardrop shaped than I imagined, but thanks nevertheless. It'll be a bit of an imagination job by the looks of it....

One of the good things about modelling something like this, is you can use a lot of interpretation. So you can mix and match different designs.

Your boat is a cylinder, so it would be better to look at the submersibles that are designed for diving to shallower depths. Here are a couple more images for inspiration. I have a lot of pictures of different submersibles on file.

Is it an AS-28?

Got a story behind it too...

That's it. The Priz class, the Russians answer to the DSRV.

I believe there are some differences between the few boats in that class.

A favourite site of mine for looking up submersible information is this one-

http://psubs.org/

This site is for people who build their own personal submarines. Most of them are quite small (under 15 feet) one or two man subs. There are all sorts of oddities there. Not the easiest site to navigate around IMO, but dig around a little and you'll find plenty to get your teeth into.

Well it's arrived, a couple of things broken in transit but nothing serious. Just off to the shed to sort it out.

We all live in a (no longer) yellow submarine, a (no longer) yellow submarine, a (no longer) yellow submarine... Come on everyone, join in...

Strawberry milkshake looking white bits are how the white primer has turned out on the yellow, and the rather decidedly grey bits are Halfords 'Citroen Arctic White'. Monday it will recieve it's red stripes (Halfords 'Fiat Red Orange'), then hopefully Thursday afternoon it will get it's maiden voyage.

It's all ready to go :-))

Had a lot of paint seepage under the masking tape, but without panic I waited for it to dry a bit then scraped off the worst of the red with a scalpel. I then mixed up some Tamiya paint to match the hull and airbrushed over it.

Well you won't lose sight of that in a swimming pool.

Reminds me that I need a trip to the barbers to have my ears lowered!

Are you going to make a sail/conning tower for it?

I hope to do so yes, after I've done some basic trials down the lake. It came with a lot of unpainted ally parts (a couple of which you can see in the pic) to put on too.

It doubles up nicely as a lighthouse...

 Hi Andyn.
Seen to remember an article in an old marine modeller mag about Eden model subs and I think the submersible
was called "Marvyn" at that time.

                       cheers Frank..

Well mine is called Melvin now ;)

I have no idea Brian...

By the way, if you're building me a helilandingpadspring the deck will need to be at least 13" wide, just made some floats for the honeybee :-))

If you paint any metal parts use an etching primer first. This will stop the paint chipping off.

I'm going to leave these unpainted, I think they contrast with the hull well. Thanks for the tip though.

They will oxidise so I'd recommend you either anodise them or give them a few coats of lacquer.

Well then, Operation Melvin The Stripy Soggy Submarine is progressing. After many failed attempts and an awful lot of language too strong for here I got the seal to go down properly(ish, it's got a tear in it), I've packed all the bellows and round the rear seal with silicon grease, and it's been for a bath run.

It doesn't leak anymore, and feeling adventurous I tried a couple of dives. All works well, even if it does come up bottom first...

A story is nothing without pictures, so here goes :-))
