Twin Motors in Rudder-Less Boat
« on: February 25, 2010, 04:07:48 pm »

I'm considering powering my next build with twin props/motors -  I'd like to avoid using a rudder/rudders, since the real boat (water-jets) didn't use them.

I can use two ESC's with a mixer unit, such that the (contra-rotating) props/motors can be controlled independently via the rudder signal - from the maneuverability point of view, how efficient is this methodology in comparison with using rudder(s)? Will the turning circle be much less?

I built one of these with Tank control only http://www.myhobbystore.co.uk/product/18075/tyne-life-boat-hull-hulmm1390 it did have fixed plastic rudders that I made (just for show when out of the water. I could turn her in her own length, no problems. I've never used a mixer in this fashion, but don't see a problem. May be some one with a little more knowledge in mixers will come along and give a definitive answer for you. :-))

'Will the turning circle be much less?'

Much less, particularly at low speed. Rudders provide nil thrust, after all.

John,
We do need more information about motors, voltage, prop size etc a picture of the install would be most helpful.

Are  you using an ACTion mixer? If so ACTion recommends you do not use esc's that have a BEC circuit. Have you disabled both BEC's on the MTroniks esc's? I also think ACTion recommend using the mixer with their esc's for best results.

Im certain FLJ would be able to help if you contacted him.
