18 Volt Battery Packs for Pro Power Cordless Tools
« on: February 28, 2010, 12:49:49 pm »

Does any one know of a supplier or refurbisher for Pro Power (B&Q) Batteries?
I have some of these for a cordless tool kit but they have succumbed to old age
and now will not even charge
B&Q dont want to know as they are a discontinued line.
This is a shot in the dark before the tools end up in the recycling bin

I had a cordless where the same thing happened. So I opened up the battery cartridge to have a look. Sure enough a couple of cells had died. When I investigated getting about 10 replacement cells, the soldering of the celss together was quite straight forward as I used to make battery packs for my lads RC cars.

I decided it was easier and more cost effective to buy a new B&D cordless. Difference was about 8 quid. So, I'd say bin it and buy a new one.

Model Power will almost certainly make you a pack, as will Component Shop, but whether it will be cost effective I'm not sure :}

My experience has been just the same. Very useful B&Q cordless drill with rubbish batteries - but to replace them would cost more than the price of a new one. What a waste of the planet's resources.

In our area we have Multicell, who will re-battery any pack for a very reasonable price. their service makes it (almost) worth while to buy super-cheap battery electric tools, and have them re-cell the packs when they die.

If you decide to re-furbish the battery packs and use a company like Multicell you may at first think that the cost is not worth it... think again! The cells in your B&Q pack were cr8p because the company who manufactured it used sub standard cells bought in dirt cheap.
The cells which will be supplied by Multicell are top grade cells and will go on and on giving sterling service.

No doubt your drill is in almost new condition and if it's a reasonably well made machine then it's worth refurbishment. The alternative is to spend the  replacement cell money on another B&Q drill and wind up back where you started six months later, then you will have two drills to throw away. Wasteful and a false economy!

No need to just throw away the old drill - strip it for it's bits, motor gearbox, rudimentary speed control etc. It doesn't all have to go to waste. Where the battery pack is concerned, it'll probably be only one or two cells that have died so the rest of the cells are still usable if made into lower voltage packs.

Makes you realise though - buy cheap, buy twice (or more) .....you may as well save up for a better one that has a recognised name and future backup.

Thanks guys for the replies.
I think I will try the refurbishment road
as the tool kit was a present.
It is not just a drill, but a circular saw,
reciprocating saw,jigsaw,hammer drill and torch.
Two chargers and five batteries.
I will have to strip the packs and see how many cells
are usable.
I can the send the empty cases for refurb (save on postage!)
As to buying cheap tools I have always bought the best I can afford
over 50 years in marine electronics and communications.
Its the fact that that it was a present made me want to do
something with it if I could

Thanks again for your input
