Is it an RN sort of ship or a Merchant vessel?
I've got hundreds of ships crests on disc that are easily copied and printed to whatever size you wish.
I've found, in the past, that an engraved crest is, to the normal observer, is indistinguishable to a printed one....and the printed one can be "renewed" many times over. Just a thought. BY.

I was thinking along similar lines to Phil. Look in yellow pages for photo etching.

Wallace, this any good?
I'm not convinced that a plaque on each side is/was the RN way of doing things though. That seems more like the American way. We tend to have a single plaque on the bridge front.
At the size you require, is etching going to be worth it? Using your printer on "custom settings" you can print out as many, and whatever size you desire. Mounted on a small wooden backing and laquered I doubt if the difference will be all that noticable. BY.

hi there Wallace

When you say plaque, do you mean a plaque which goes on the side of your Stand?    With the name of the ship on??

what I have done in the past, is get some polished brass - from the scrap yard - the stuff which comes from the letterboxes (brass flaps) - cut to size and then use the Letter sets with nice lettering - done the name of the vessel and then varnished over the top with satin varnish - from Humrol.

Assuming you only want the Name engraved, then I would recommend a local shoe repair shop.

Mine does engraving onto plates.

Another thought is Funeral directors. They have their own engraving machine and don't make too many plates a day.   :embarrassed:

Ok.

Maybe it's that time of night.

Anyone else wince when they see the apostrophe placement in this thread's title?

Other than that I'm saying nothing.  :-X

%) Of course you could try the old way i use to make military flags ,print the image (boats name) reverse the image in your pc print now the clever bit ,paint with w/proof pva over the image give it a couple of coats allow to dry now with a DAMP sponge remove the paper and if careful you will find that the print is on the pva  with no paper attatched, now turn over ,trim, and glue to model the name is now the correct way around, varnish if required    this system allows for a certain amount of flexiblity as the pva will bend around odd shapes
