German Destroyer information requested
« on: March 14, 2010, 11:46:11 am »

Hi All,
I have built a Narvik type destroyer (photo attached) and want to enhance it some more detail. I attach a scanned photo showing the rear funnel of Z39. A bit of a long shot but can any of you experts out there identify the array of objects mounted high on the side of the funnel? These objects were mounted on both sides of the funnel and a similar array is mounted on the front of the bridge. These appeared about 1943 onwards and were not original fit on the earlier type 1934 or type 1936 destroyers.

hi
thats a very nice model
you have the radar mattress to the rear of the funnel flanked by a pair of twin 37mm AAs and a life raft at the fron
i think they could be lights or smoke generators i dont have my references to hand
cheers

Thanks Gary
I think your may be right about them being lights. I don't think they are smoke generators as that would not be appropriate for the similar array mounted on the front of the bridge. On the original photo the objects look bell shaped which would be appropriate for lamps - its just odd they have this concentration in three places - none on forward funnel or on the deckhouse mounting the single 15cm guns.

...not sure but I believe Model Boats did a photo file on a Z39 a few months back, if you go on their webpage they had some good reference photos which may help, ask Colin,

Z39 was extensively featured in the November and December 2009 issues of Model Boats including the photo above but there are no close ups of this particular feature or any explanation in the text. At a guess I would assume them to be recognition signal lamps as the configuration on the front of the bridge is identical to that on the side of the aft funnel and would enable the same patterns to be shown.

Those photos are available at higher resolution here http://gallery.me.com/ingura#100491&view=grid&bgcolor=black&sel=21   courtesy of Peter Lienau aka Ingura.

The bridge shot definitely looks like electric lamp bulbs and I suspect that it is a recognition matrix system

...thanks Colin, I would have had to wake up the malamute laying on my bed, as all my old mags are underneath and he's rather grumpy this time of night

Thanks guys - the suggestion that they are a recognition lamp matrix sounds really plausible. I have also posted this query on the Deans Marine forum as Colin who runs the forum works in Germany and has model making friends who are very knowlegeable on these matters but so far they are stumped (but still looking). If they come up with something I will let you know.

Had a look in 'German Destroyers & Escorts' (PSL 1981). These items, I agree they are most probably lights, appear in several photos. The ones in the photo above appear to be paired, or maybe even tripled, but there are also pictures of single ones. Definitely something electrical as the cables can be seen clearly in some shots.

Could they not be R.A.S lights?
 Refuelling at sea at night?

 Just a thought, Paul...
