Fabric softner
« on: March 14, 2010, 07:42:31 am »

I was talking to a model plane builder friend the other day and was discussing my mayflower kit Im building.

I have been having issues with the ply being very dry and brittle.  He has been building vintage plane kits for years and has suggested a technique for getting life back into ply.

Soak the ply for a few hours in hot water with a few teaspoons of fabric softner.  I gave it a try and it has certainly made a difference, the ply is no longer breaking up when i try to cut it.

Has anyone else used this method before?

I guess it depends on the ply.  If its steam pressure laminated or glued and of course the type of glue used.  It certainly worked for me

Maybe it would be wise to test on an offcut before soaking the entire sheet of parts
