HMS Exploit
« on: March 22, 2010, 07:50:49 am »

Managed to get some good pictures of HMS Exploit yesterday whilst out on my boat, she was moored up at the Brittannia Naval College on the River Dart, hopefully it will help detailing my 1/16th scale model of her (last picture)...

Hi Derek,

Four vessels of the same design- Example, Express, Explorer and Exploit- were built for service with the Royal Navy Auxiliary Service (RNXS). They carried the prefix 'XSV', meaning 'Auxiliary Service Vessel', and could be distinguished from the Archer Class by their black hulls. However when the Royal Navy Auxiliary Service (RNXS) was disbanded on March 31st 1994, the four craft transferred to the Royal Navy, where they serve as Sea Training Tenders from Royal Navy University Units (URNU), when they changed over to the Royal Navy the Penant numbers were changed, this model was built when she was in service with the Auxillary Service.....

The other three ships were A163- Express, A164- Explorer and A165 Example

Thanks

P used to refer to small minor war vessels and A was for any naval auxilliary vessel, though all the Duck class salvage mooring vessels used to have a P prefix.

Hi Russ,

I would love to see a small video or some pic's of your model on the water? I've had these plans for a few years, but never built her. I keep going back to her and thinking one day. It would be nice to see the performance.

Can you give me details of power, motors and props please?

Many thanks,

mark

Hi Mark

Only got a couple of pics from the other weekend, she is powered by a 24volt motor running on 24v, the prop is a propshop 2 blade racing prop which gives her a good scale speed.....

No Union Jack on the Jackstaff when an RN ship is under way
Jack is only run up when ship comes to anchor or to a buoy
or secures alongside!

I remember when all the hulls where towed into Portsmouth Harbour from the original builder by the MoD when the builder went into liquidation. The hulls where bare empty shells like you buy in a shop to make up. They where kept there until another builder could finish them off, the MoD kind of siezed them before the reciever took ownership of them.
