Getting old? I think I've arrived there.
For anyone interested in class performances of music, may I point you toward an old issue "Harry James - The Sheffield Recordings".
Why should I recommend these performances? Apart from the quality of the players and the recordings, they were all done live and with NO electronic gimmicks used. From the begining to the end, no editing or anything else. Direct recording to a master disc, all live. As someone on the TV would say "I've started, so I'll finish". Not even done in a studio from what I've heard, some old church in L.A. was the venue. The story goes that while doing the second last track on one of the discs, an insect flew into the church and landed on the master disc while it was being used. Result? Scrap the whole session and start again. The band must have been weeping at that. Being real pro's (as compared with the modern wannabees), they did it. Results, a class piece of music history.
If listened to on headphones, you can occaisionally hear the music being torn off the stand prior to the next number. No artificial breaks between tracks for these guys!
As a (very) amateur player who has done dance work before, respect is not an adequate term for artists such as these.
Off my soap box now, I'll go back to listening to the REAL musicians from days gone by.
