HMS Antelope - what did she have?
« on: December 26, 2006, 12:55:10 am »

Been doing a bit of research for a potential next project, Type 21 Frigate HMS Antelope which was lost in the Falklands. Turns out she was the only Type 21 not to be fitted with 4 exocet launchers behind the 4.5 inch gun.

Anyone know what armament or other items were fitted in this area at the time of the falklands conflict? BTW its 25 years this coming year.

TIA

Before the Exocet launchers were fitted there were just 2 x chaff launchers on raised foredeck. But thought they were all fitted with Exocet by Falklands.

I have just checked in Modern Combat Ships TYPE 21 and you are quite right.
On page 88 there is a pic of Antelope entering San Carlos and she has the 2 x 3inch Chaff launchers and 4 x Lockers in between.
Strange too, her Scott Domes are painted black.
Hope this helps.

Sorry mate,
The top pic is F169 Amazon
The bottom pic is F185 Avenger.
I too thought they were all converted and am myself renovating a 1/72 Scale Type 21 (F171 Active), but on furter research found that Antelope was never converted.

Hi Turbulent

I know what you mean, but 4.5mm gun? As Gun Director for the first commission of HMS Arrow, I am certain we had a Mk VIII 4.5 INCH gun on the front end, and I'm sure Antelope and the rest of the type 21's had the same.

Served six years in 6th Frigate Squadron (Type 12's), didn't think my grey cells were that ruined. Cheers

BTW. Decks posts Falklands are GREY. Bollards are GREY. !!!!
