"Forbidden" Timeout, error 404
« on: April 03, 2010, 07:52:09 pm »

This is probably my first and hopefully my last complaint.
Quite awhile ago I was having problems with the "cut and paste" system. I kept on getting a "Forbidden" message when I tried to paste. Recently my newer posts (Nautical but True) have accepted the "copy and paste" things...great, saved me an awful lot of duplication and typing. But now it's come back. "Forbidden" (something number 404). This is seriously hacking me off now and as the system worked for so long I think the fault lies at your end. If this continues then I must (reluctantly) stop posting. Life is just too short to have to type out everything twice. Answers please. BY.
PS...some may say "thank goodness" for that...but others may not.....

Bryan,

Please do not give up. You have a significant band of followers who are fascinated by your experiences and who enjoy the cartoons!

"Cut and Paste" can be variable on the Internet. Computers may be supposed to be logical but sometimes their logic escapes me as things change for little or no apparent reason. Twice recently I have had to change the way I do things because the procedure I favoured was no longer possible. Having said that I "Cut and Paste" every day within Mayhem as I send out a "Welcome Message" to all newly joined Members which can mean 4/5 every day - and it is working.

There is a setting you can change in Internet explorer or firefox..... the name of which escapes me right now that prevents the timeout

Hi Bryan,

As other have said, it's probably not limited to a 'Mayhem' problem.
Personally I find that if a post is running into a lengthy one I stop, copy to Word (or my preferred application, Outlook Express (email)), finish the post there (including editing and spell checking) THEN Copy and paste back here onto Mayhem.

I would also recommend the use of button before posting so you can see exactly what your getting first.

I'd also gone through and carried out the usual hosting, loading, SQL, system settings, maintenance routines executed, everything seems nominal this end.

Bryan, there are slight anomolies which can catch us all out.  One that has done me a few times is when I have not checked the size of an attachment and it is over the 161 kb limit.  When you try to post it comes back with an error and I have then found I lost the text in the proces of trying to repost.  I now always write a lengthy post in Word and then copy and paste into Mayhem.

If you are ever doing a lengthy post I would recommend either Word, or Outlook, and then you could at least e-mail it to one of us and we can post it up for you and you won't have lost it.

i'd certainly hang on in there, your posts are obviously very popular and would be missed by all who share your interests.

The time of day can also be a significant factor. The Internet slows down drastically from about 3pm until around mid evening as America wakes up and all our school kids start stealing music etc. It can sometimes be very difficult to get a reliable connection in this period.

At the risk of appearing to be a pain in the rump...
Thanks for the replies, but no solution has yet been found.
I've just spent a fruitless Sunday afternoon trying to get the damn thing to work.
So. In easy steps, I shall explain what I've been doing, and surely somebody can point me in another direction.
1.   I write what I wish to post in Microsoft Word, having (in this case) named the page "Olwen-9", and saved it as such.
2.   I then "copy" the item.
3.   Then I open a "reply" window in "Chit-Chat" ..."Naut str but true".
4.   Click on the window to bring up the cursor.
5.   Click on "paste". My written text then appears in the window. Great.
6.   Click "Post" and the "Forbidden Access" thing appears, and everything else including the Mayhem site just vanishes.

So there has to be some sort of link between the written word that appears before posting, and the bit in the Mayhem server that says, basically, "sod-off". And that's getting right up my facial protuberance. Platitudes, commiserations, sympathy and all that guff are nice to read, but they don't solve the dilemma/problem.
Just this once more I'll waste some of my allotted 3 score and 10 to type in the next one.....but let's get a solution,eh? BY.

Bryan

I had a similar problem and this was down to a word in what I had typed the forum did not like, the problem word was L Y N X as in helicopter. I put the spaces in to stop it happening again, ask Martin if he can have a look at your text.

There is another thing going on too, but, not just with Mayhem, several sites I visit, when you click on a link you know works, I am getting "stack overload, website can't be found , ERROR 404" and numerous others!
God knows what is going on as it seems we don't!
