R.N.L.B Margaret
« on: April 04, 2010, 06:04:51 pm »

Blessed with good weather this afternoon i was able to finish spraying the cabin for my Watson, alls i need to finish off on this one now is the mast/aerial array.
This boat was built from various pictures of R.N.L.B Margaret which came on to station at Dunbar in 1958, what i am struggling with is the type of mast array that she had? If anyone has any pictures it would be most appreciated, because i cant find any  :((

Thanks

Hi Russ

I've just done a Google search for you and found 72 thousand references to the "Watson class lifeboat".  I didn't copy any of the pictures as they may have been copyright.

Is this any help?

I've got three (different) postcards of her in Dunbar harbour. I can scan them and email them to you if you like.

She didn't have an internal rudder though.

Here you go...

As far as i know *all* 47' Watsons had external rudders. After about 1954/55, all the 46'9" Watsons, 47' Watsons and 52' Barnetts were fitted with external rudders as they were more manoeverable than those with internal rudders.

Cheers

How strange, this picture looks like it as the internal rudder?

Sorry Russ, I have to agree with Lance. When I was researching the Helen Wycherley I never found any reference to the 47ft Watson having an internal rudder, all external fittings. The 46ft and 46ft 9in Watsons had a mixture of internal and external rudders with the later builds of each batch using the external setup. As the 47ft Watsons were developments from these two classes then external wins the day.Plus all three scans that Lance has added show the external fitting.

If you blow up your b&w picture you can just make out the shaft for the rudder to the rear of the stern post, also the smudge at deck level is in the correct place for the steering box cover, difficult to see I know but unless a clearer, better angled picture comes to light I would have to fit the external rudder system.

Sorry to rain on your parade mate but that's the problem with building old lifeboats, not many of them left to nip out to look at and most of them have been messed about with during their life after the RNLI.

No problem Mike, the more info/facts i can get the better, might be easier to have a renaming ceremony !  <:(

One of my next builds for a friend  is of the Duke of Cornwall, a 52ft Barnett, should be no problems there as my friend owns it!

Never mind mate, when she is in the water nobody will even notice the rudder as you have made a cracking job of the rest of her  :-))

Tell them it was a short lived experiment by the RNLI that didn't work out and they then put her back to 'standard' configuration, if they want to prove otherwise then let them do the research !!  8)

Nice...

The later 52' Barnetts are  very similar to the 47' Watsons.
