The Ormesby Cross
« on: December 29, 2006, 01:22:35 pm »

Hi all
Just thought I would post a few photos of my latest build the Ormesby  Cross.
She is owned by Svitzer Marine Ltd and working on the Tees at Middlesborough.
I have completed most of the hull work and just started the super structure I will keep you posted as I progress. I have had in the water to check for ballast, it looks as if she is going to weigh around 44lb total weight ( heavy  ::) ::) ::) ).

very nice is that one of the tyne tug hulls if so how long is she. i am about to start another portgarth and looking forward to doing the hull fitting out using mmm steerable Kort's and 70mm thruster props from prop shop. what are using for your motors Ive got some monsters off a new shape Astra a bit thirsty on battery power but with so much buoyancy in the hull i can just put more batterys in her prob 2x 12amp and 1x2v 4amp for the winch.

Hi ministeve
No this is not one of tyne models hulls, I obtained this hull from MMM.
The steerable Kort’s are from tyne models, Grapner bow thruster and two car fan blower motors for main drive.

Ps yes Tommy I am still building models, waiting for the new release from Tyne Models I understand it will be out in April.

I hope you don't think I'm being a sm*rt*ss chipchase (I realise it may just be a typo!), but just so you name the boat correctly when it's built, it's the "Ormesby Cross" (Notice the E in Ormesby) - These tugs were used on the Tees, and they all took their names from local villages around Middlesbrough.... Hence Norton Cross, Ayton Cross etc etc.

Regards
Eddy

Hi Andy
I made them from bits and pieces accumulated over the years, I did try to purchase the winches but unfortunately there are no suppliers that produce a winch that looks any thing like the winch/windless on the Ormesby. They are not yet complete, still got electrical control box, anchor chains and hydraulic pipes to fit. I am starting to build the main aft towing winch today, will post photos as soon as complete.

Hi all
Just started the super structure thought I would let you see the progress, now you see why it gets the nickname the lighthouse because of the size of the wheelhouse.

Hi all
Stern winch is finally finished - took these photos today; she sails well after a few sea trials. I first tried her with two car fan blower motors, which couldn’t pull the skin of a rice pudding  :( :( :(. I went out and purchased two Torpedo 850 motors - what a difference!  ;D ;D ;D

Car heater motors were no good?  :o

Any chance you could post pictures of the old and replacement motors for comparison?

Hi Martin
Photos of both motors, the car fan blower motors had never been used.   I bought them from Doncaster last year. I have used this type of motor in the past with good success. After fitting them in the Ormesby and testing the performance of the motors, I found that they where underpowered to say the least. After removing the motors they were bench checked and found they were running at 2250rpm. This was checked with friends’ motors of the same type and found they ran at 5500rpm. This was why I upgraded the motors to two torpedo 850s. I was a little bit apprehensive as this type of motor runs at 9500rpm, but she runs great. I have just weighed her with ballast and batteries.  The total weight is 52lbs.

Hi Peter
They were sold as 12v, this is the name plate on the motors.

Hi Mike
Some closer shots of the stern winch. I built the winch out of copper pipe plasicard
and white metal fittings that where given to me by two very good friends. (Tom and Les from Tyne Models). ;) ;) ;)

The reason I asked was I wondered if they had been 24v volt motors, I have seen a lot of them about and yes they will work of 12v but not very well, I wondered whether they Had been from commercial vehicles. They must be just low power version.

That's strange about the fan heater motors, never heard of that before.
A lesson for us all there me thinks -  check the outout speed!
