SEA IMP build
« on: April 15, 2010, 07:49:06 am »

I thought I would share with you my build of the Sea imp ,Canadian tug.

The hull I used to base the model on is a George Turner 14" ABS tug hull ,as I cant seem to find any plans of this little boat ,
I have resorted to scaling up pictures of the internet( most of them from from this site , taken at shows).
first things first the hull needed to be widened , the width of the Sea imp is nearly half the length , the GT tug hull is already in two halves , so the keel was cut out and a 2" strip of styrene was added to the centre and formers fitted to the bow and stern to give a frame work for the  car body filler to adhere to.

Car body filler used to fill gaps and blend in the curves.
"D" section styrene strips were heated up with a modellers hot air gun( used by aero modellers to shrink solorfilm on wing panels ect ) and then glued into place using cyno.

Ray's Freewinds is a Sea Imp hull - should be photo's here.
I have a plan of the Sea Imp but you're past that stage - also a few photos of variations of it.

Why is the"mast" such a heavy structure?

Hi Martin
I think there is a drivers position on the roof and the mast provides shelter.
Paul will no doubt correct me if I am wrong.

Just for your info, the 'Imp' boats vary in length from 25' to 50', depending on which boat it is. The latest tug, Sea Imp IX measures 53'-6"x24'4x11' -6" and is powered by twin 500 HP diesels, giving a speed of 10 knots.
Good luck with the model.

Del

A red rag to a bull Del !   of course I will correct you !

The" heavy looking mast " as Martin puts it is part of the superstructure that has the Radar mounted on it above the skipper when using the upper wheelhouse position , the other reason for this is that the very tall mast with tow indicating lights etc.. is on a pivot within the raised superstructure so it can be lowered back towards the stern to get under low brigades etc , handy for the us modellers to -it will take up less room to store .

Haven't done much more to it in the past few days as Ive been getting boats ready for the "  May month of shows" Beale park ,merstram,Wicksteed and Alfold and if possible  day at Old Warden on the only weekend left  (8 +9th )!

When you come to Alfold Paul have a look at the Hanwell & district stand, if Len Lewington is there I feel sure he will have his Sea Imp models on display, he may also be at Merstham.

The sea Imp is now finished it had it,s maiden voyage at the Merstram show the other week ,, it didn't go to well at all, I didn't fit ant rudders as I thought that the action ESC/mixer unit would do it all for me but with the tug only measuring 13" long the controls were way to fierce and It wanted to spin all the time .

So Del and I had a re-think on the way back and agreed that I would need to fit rudders with external linkages as there is no room inside and no access to the inner stern area.

Rudders were made from plasticard and brass tillers were fitted a small bore model aircraft snake/bowden cable was fitted, the Action mixer/ ESC unit was removed in favour of a single M-tronics ESC ,micro switches were fitted to the steering servo to cut one motor on each side when full rudder is thrown.

success! Last Sunday morning at our local boating lake I sailed it again and it handled fine , I will be using it at the forcoming shows ( wicksteed, Alfold, wings and wheels) if any one wants a look /chat about it.
Paul.
