looking for a nice sail boat plans or kit recomendations
« on: April 22, 2010, 05:30:05 pm »

Hi guys I am mostly a scale guy but I would like a nice sailboat to run around the lake when my batteries are dead in the other boats. I would like for the boat to look nice rather than be fast (planked decks mahogany planked sides etc if possible) I am not totally new to boats but this would be my first wood hull so I dont want to get to complicated. I am open to suggestions as I am out of my element I know I can get a rtr sailboat for 200 but would like to build a nicer looking boat. not looking for something huge just a nice sailboat.

If you are interested in Kits, have a look at the Victor Models range. They are in California.

Hi.
I would recommed this model for a beginner to yachts as it is a straight forward chine design easy to build. It has a good beam on it and plenty of freeboard so it can be sailed in a stiff breeze. I has no vices when sailing either and has plenty of room inside for radio gear and winch/sail servo.

 available on line from www.mybobbystore..

Starlet MM1048 Designer: Vic Smeed Star Rating: * Simple 34in. x 9.5in. yacht with semi-scale cabin and cockpit. Displacement approximately 10.7lbs,

                       Plan price £9.95

Hi,
The soling is a good basic kit. There are a few mods that will make the yacht stronger and more competative.

Change mast to boom fitting (gooseneck)
Fit stainless eyebolts to deck for jib fitting and also for shrouds. (lines from deck to mast)
Use an aluminium sail arm for the sails. ideally with pullies on the ends for smoother line travel.
Reinforce the main bulkhead to strenghthen the deck hull join. also puts mast pressure directly onto the hull.
Buy the pre filled keel as the resin/lead is a real pain.

I have sailed my soling for four years. They are great. The standard sails work well. and the kit parts fit together well. If you use styrene adhesive be carefull you dont use to much as the hull can melt.
If you want any help please ask or pm me

Greetings,

I am building one of these ( http://www.racingsparrow.co.nz/ ) in the one meter size. I bought the book that he sells and it is well worth the money, he will walk you through the whole build.

The boat came in today w00t w00t. I am thinking of building the mast and sail booms out of carbon fiber rod unless you guys think its a bad idea. I will order a gooseneck and sailing servo with my next paycheck hopefully I also need to look at my spectrum radio and see if I can take the spring out of the trigger or I may just go with one of my regular 2 channel radios.
