wee nip
« on: April 23, 2010, 08:45:46 pm »

ive just purchased a set of wooden parts for the marine modeling wee nip , has anybody else biult one useing birch ply  in 1/16th inch and changed the fin laminations for two 5mm instead of the three  3mm laminations in the plan ,  i know that im 1mm over size but as it needs sanding to areofoil profile will it matter ? i also intend to keep the fin permantly attached in the fin box ,  the object is to biuld at least three identical models so my partner  & i can sail together , haveing a "spare " model means that our family or freinds can also sail when they visit !  :-))

thank you will look later , its just a thought why laminate three sections together when two or one peice could be used instead ?  im only looking to sail for fun with my family  ! hence making three or four boats at the same time .

Hi triumphjon,
I`ve built two nips and I used scrap 9mm ply for the fins, seemed a lot easier than laminating two or three pieces together,it`s worked fine for me  :-))

Hi Mate,
I cast the first one using a plaster mould, even though I heated the mould before I poured the lead,it still cracked so the second one was done using the method on the plan.
It looks a long drawn out affair, but it really is pretty easy,I made mine a little oversize and used a Sureform to take it down to the final size and weight.
The Wee Nip is pretty popular in our club (Glasgow Richmond MBC)and a few other local clubs are getting in on the act too,for this reason were going to make our own bulb mould, the former is already made ok2
Definatetly check out the links left by Gingyer above as they give some good building tips. :-))
