« on: January 04, 2007, 01:51:49 am »

Hi Fellow Modelers

I am in the final stages of assembling a Borderer steam engine that i Have built from scrap, and have a query  :-\ What do you use to seal up the faces IE top cyl cover to block or valve chest to block in past engines i have used oiled brown paper for example (small single cylinder types) put for example this unit is piston ported so i am looking at using some silicone type gasket goo  ??? :-\

Has any body else used this or what other things do you do ???

In use a non setting Hermetite on my steam plant.  It dries to a silicone like consistency and so as well as sealing effectively is relatively easy to clean off again when you dismantle.

Hi, PTFE tape can be used to good effect, intertwine it around the fixing studs, or lay it on the mating surfaces like a gasket and bolt up the covers, use the tape that plumbers use for sealing fittings.
It's not messy to use.

You might try Loctite Plastic Gasket 568. It's a soft consistency, orange in colour and I've used it for years.  I also use oiled brown paper for the "not so complicated" gaskets.

Have to agree with Malcolm. I think I've used the same Locktite product as him, but I've used the somewhat low-tech oiled brown paper solution also, and it seems to work just as well, certainly it's never given me problems with any of my engines.

Well Guys the job is done

One Boderer 5/8 x 5/8 twin sitting on my desk here at work all sealed up absolutely beautiful

The loctite i refered to earlier is a delight to use with the added feature of ever so slightly locking the screws (very useful for the screwed exhaust joints into the block) ;D ;D ;D ;D

used a piece of wire dipped in the spout to wipe the surface of the joints

Watch out for a new post in the section i will try and publish photos

Its the piston ported version at it absolutely purrs i have run it on compressed air down to 3 psi today and guess what

Cant get that stupid grin of my face  :-[ :-[
